Generation Of Computers ! 1955 To Till Date
Hello everyone, happy to meet you all today through my blogs . Today's blog will be the history of how computers generated and got modified through several ages . computers started from a big calculator and changed into small handy mobile now .
The computer growth is identified by calculating the development and use of advanced components in it . so by grouping the development stages it is categorized into many generations .Let's see what are they .
First generation :
- A basic idea of computer is it's 1st generation computers which was from 1942 - 1955 .
- The main component used was Vacuum tubes .
- They were very gigantic which even occupied the space of an entire room .
- Consumed more power to work.
- It used machine language .
- Eg : ENIAC , EDVAC , UNIVAC 1 [ENIAC weighed about 27 tons , size 8 feet x 100 feet x 3 feet and consumed around 150 watts of power.
Second generation :
- It came into use by 1955 to 1964 .
- The main component used was Transistors .
- They were smaller when compared to 1st generation computers and consumed less heat and power .
- Punched cards were used .
- The very first operating system was developed .
- Batch processing and multiprogramming were included .
- Both machine language and assembly language were used .
- eg : IBM 1401 , IBM 1620 , UNIVAC 1108
Third generation :
- It started from 1964-1975 .
- Integrated circuits [IC] were implemented .
- Computers were smaller , faster and more reliable .
- It relatively consumed less power .
- High level languages were used .
- Eg : IBM 360 SERIES , HONEYWELL 6000 SERIES .
Fourth generation :
- It was invented in 1975 and was in use till 1980 .
- A new component micro processor [very large scale integrated circuits(VLSI)
- The size became smaller and faster .
- Microcomputer series such as IBM and APPLE were developed .
- Portable computers were introduced .
Fifth generation :
- It started in late 90's that is from 1980 to till now .
- The computers which we use now are 5th generation computers but in evolved forms .
- The main component was ultra large scale integration [ULSI] .
- They had the features of parallel processing.
- Computers contains super conductors .
- The size was drastically reduced .
- They can recognize images and graphics .
- Introduction of artificial intelligence and expert systems .
- Able to solve high complex problems including decision making and logical reasoning .
Sixth generation :
- These are the computers which will be invented in future including many techniques and modern components .
- There may be parallel and distributed computing .
- Computers will develop the robotics .
- Including natural language processing .
- Development of voice recognition software .
