There are nine lovebird species, all of which belong to the genus Agapornis, but few are usually available as pets. That is, Fisher's lovers, masked, with pink faces. Lovebirds are so named because of their strong pair. Lovebirds range in size from just over 5 inches to just over 6½ inches, making them one of the smaller parrot seeds. In contrast to the budgerigars (“parakeets”), which have long, pointed tails, lovebirds have short, blunt tail feathers, and lovebirds are also more chunky.
Did you know that lovers are parrots? Yes, it's a small parrot, but it's still a parrot. They belong to the Psittaciformes to which all parrots belong. They have a hook-shaped beak and zygodactyl legs (two toes pointing forward and two pointing backward). The
species of lovebirds can be divided into those with a distinctive white eye ring-a mask or a yellow neck (A. personatus), a fisherman (A. fischeri), black-cheeked lovebirds (A. nigrigenis) and nyasa or lilians (A. lilianae)-and those without a ring under the eyes-pink face or roseicollis (A. roseicollis), black wings, or abyssinian, (A. taranta), redhead or blush, (A Pullarius), Madagascar or gray head (A. canus), and black-collared lovebird or Swindern (A. swindernianus) lovebirds. Some lovers come with many color mutations created by breeding to emphasize specific color characteristics.
In the wild, turtle pigeons live in small herds and feed on fruits, vegetables, grass and seeds. Abyssinians, or black-winged turtle doves, have a special diet that includes native figs. Therefore, it is extremely rare in captivity.
Lovebirds are very active
Like all parrots, lovebirds are very active birds and require some exercise to stay in top condition. Anyone interested in lovebird adoption should be ready to provide their feathered friends with a safe place for birds to play for hours a day outside their cages. This allows birds to exercise all the muscle groups they need to stay healthy and provide the important psychological stimuli that these highly intelligent animals need.
