What Is Peace

WWorld Peace day was first celebrated by UN in 1981. It promotes peace among people.

But here a question arises, do we want peace or silence?

Moreover, do we even understand the difference between silence and peace?

Take a pause and think about it .

We all have heard in school time , our teachers saying ,"silence class" or "maintain pin drop silence",

So, it's important for us to understand the difference between the two and which of the two is more important in a particular situation.

According to experts, silence is absence of external sound around us .

When our ears don't hear any sound , than it is called silence , like you are walking in a graveyard , you may experience silence , but surely your heartbeat will be fast and mind with rush of thoughts in it , thus silence is majorly related to our sense of hearing .

While according to Maha Ghosananda, "peace is not just of war, it is a virtue; a state of mind; a disposition for benevolence; confidence; and justice", thus peace is getting rid of our internal thoughts and ideas, that go on in our minds .

Like you visit a park , you may hear some sounds of children playing or bird's chirping , but your mind will be very much relaxed and feeling very fresh and clean with all chaos , this is peace .

( Fun fact : About 1700 thoughts pass through a human mind in an hour!) ,

Thus if our mind goes through so many idea or chaos , can we really expect some peace .

We always say "rest in peace", and not "rest in silence", because our minds become peaceful as we die ( zero thoughts)

Famous Sanskrit quote , Transliteration:

yaścemāṃ vasudhāṃ kṛtsnāṃ praśāsedakhilāṃ nṛpaḥ ।

tulyāśmakāñcano yaśca sa kṛtārtho na pārthivaḥ ॥

             English Translation:

A king who governs the whole earth may not be satisfied / be at peace. But a hermit for whom a piece of stone and gold are equal, is definitely content / at peace. ( Person is not attached by materialistic things ).

Thus , the best way to get peace in this modern world is by not getting clinged or attached to these materialistic things to get feeling of satisfaction , it's like having a something but Don't try to take control over it .

Many scholar's believe celibacy ( bhram'charya) is a great way to achieve peace but that's not the thing that everyone in this modern world can adopt.

So swami Vivekananda said ,

" when you make peace with self ,

You make peace with the world "

And this can be best explained by this story of a Zen monk.

Once a senior monk passed by the courtyard of a monastery where he heard two groups of monks arguing about the temple flag fluttering in the breeze.

"It is the flag that moves," one group argued.

"No, it is the wind that moves," argued the other group.

While both the argued, and were responding to the logic of the other side, coming up with their own rationale point for their respective positions.

Now, I ask you , what do you think is really moving??

After listening for a while, the senior monk interrupted them and said, "If you look more closely you will see that it is neither the flag nor the wind that moves -- what moves is your mind , it's all in your mind because mind is not at peace , it is in tubulance of wild thought , you are experiencing all this .

This story is a reminder of how easily we fall into some unuseful thinking . It doesn't matter what the subject is, we are fully capable of taking sides and then feeling the need to prove ourselves "right." The lesson is that we are able to develop a sense of peace / awareness in our habit through thoughts and feelings . Interrupting ingrained reactions to things allows us to consciously create new reactions that better reflect our current stage of development.

One of the most direct methods of doing that is to catch ourselves reliving an old tape and ask ourselves, "Do I really need to fight over this flag ( materialistic thing )?" If not, then we pointedly ask ourselves, "What thought do I choose to have?" This is a very practical exercise that works as well with habitual emotions and memories as it does with thoughts.

Such small exercises and stories serve as intriguing reminders , that we can use to keep our mind peaceful in the hustle of everyday life.

And as soon as we really understand and start implementing it, each day will be a world Peace in day.

Until than keep learning , keep helping ...
