In updating the cononic stage play “Blithe Spirit” director Edward Hall and a trio of writers have created a stew of comdey styles.
There are chunkes of the early 20th century screwball force that markes the show's previous adaptation, a pleasant 1945 ramp. There are moments that feels derived from contemporary - or at least '90s- sitcoms, with broad repartes and arched eyebrowes. The play, a 1941 gem by Noel Coward, is a ubiquitous on community theater stages as it has been on the west End and Broadway, with a nearly 2000 shows intial London run preceding mountains in every born and summerstovk stage in the westren hamisphere. “Blithe Spirit” works on stage by making zaniness out of that scenario; Ruth does't know which wife Charles is talking to at any Given moment, Elvira is free to sinpe to Ruth's face and Charles grows increasingly flustered. In both this and the 1945 adaptation, those moments are funny and effective and particularly so, In the new version, thanmks to Mann's savory , lively performance.
Witty dialogue and comedies of error only go so for in 2021, though hence the additions. Man's gag andpitfalls certainly work. I was really upset when i saw the thrown typewriter be heading a nearby statue.
However, a closer look at the script about Charles' two shortcomings, one intimate and the other on expert, seems unnecessary at best. This "Blithe Spirit " feels like a decent night in the theater. You won,t complain, but the nights are more dependent on where you go for dinner.
