How Top Leaders Make Great Decisions

The better the daily decisions the more superior your daily results.

1. Overprepare then move speedily. The majority walk into a meeting or deal flying by the seat of their pants. Masters of business are utterly overprepared. They crunch the data, go granular on the subject and make great notes. Then, once armed with intelligence and confidence on the issue, they decide quickly, understanding that too much ruminating causes opportunities to find another beneficiary.

2. Surround yourself with super smart and practical confidants. Many of my billionaire-level clients ask their small circle advisors for their input on a deal and then have the humility to listen to them deeply (almost all of them have a ritual of sleeping on the decision). But then, they trust their experience as well as their instincts and do what they wish to do. This makes them leaders (never followers).

3. Exploit bad decisions to make fantastic decisions. Each adverse choice equips you with the insight to make good ones. A failure is only a failure when seen as a failure. “Fail fast,” is a great idea from Michael Dell. By making a ton of decisions you’ll become genius-grade at generating superb ones, developing a sixth-sense on the right move to make. Stumble your way to greatness. Please.

4. Scenario-plan the worst case scenario then hope for the best. Ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen and if you’re cool with it, move ahead and hope for the best. Remember: without risk there is no return.

5. Inspect the result. Trust people (if they’ve earned your trust) yet always check the result. “Trust yet verify,” is an old line yet a wise one. So many businesses run into problems because the leader stopped making sure what was supposed to be done (at the highest level) was actually done. Don’t get into the groove of being so busy you no longer follow up and hold people accountable.

6. Optimize to next-level. Once you’ve made your decision, keep doing all you can to make things even better. A “NSI Mindset” (Never Stop Improving) is the price of entry for world-class results.

Not so long right? You might have a ton more [good on you] and many less [that’s okay—it really is]. Not quite sure.

Yet it does invoke a sense of urgency, doesn’t it? Makes you live more to the point and stop postponing the doing of extremely important things.

…makes you want to forgive those who should be forgiven (that’s everyone who has hurt you).

…makes you want to launch that startup or write that novel or run that marathon or bake that cake (ok forget the cake thing; I don’t know what I was thinking).

…makes you want to dance barefoot after a rainstorm, see the art of the great masters and eat food so fresh and simple and fantastic that it makes you want to kiss the chef (right smack on their forehead).

…makes you want to hug your kids tighter and tell your spouse you love them more and touch the feet of your elderly parents who you just know you will miss dearly when they are no longer around.

…makes you want to take the trips and sing the songs and smell the flowers and take the risks that the best, most heroic and most alive part of you begs you to do.

“Life is lived out on the wire,” advised the famed high-wire walker Pappa Wallenda. “The rest is just waiting.”

The more I live the more I know that he was right.

Hope this helps. This is your time to lead your finest life while you impact the world.

All my very best,

Mubashir Mk
