Wonders Of Untouched Nature - Shillong Plateau

Despite being a breathtaking destination of the North-East India The Shillong Plateau is a rolling table land of the Meghalaya constituted of aderoble highlands and lowlands meanwhile the plateau covers the affluent nature and beauty of hills and vellays reflects  plenty of trees shrubs mosses of different plant communities and animals species embracing thebiogeographical nature.

Geomorphologically the Shillong Plateau covers the delight landscape of Garo, Khasi & Jantia hills including as the integral part of Indian Peninsular Shield while on the other hand, the River Basin- Ganga-Brahmaputra cuts off the shield thereby spreading of its alluvium.

Geologically the interior core part of the Shillong Plateau is composed of some ancient rocks and minerals thereby folding of gnessic and Precambrian rock dipping with Tertiary sediments. Coal, Iron ore & limestone are quirred around the plateau.

Geographically, the plateau covers the entire landscape of Shillong ranging from west to east direction of the city embrace with 1500 m altitude whereas the Shillong Peak covers the highest feet of 6433 sq.ft located 5 kilometers away from the west Shillong owing to its physiography the river gorges associated with the plateau reflects such a glorious riverine site. 

Physiographically the plateau revolves around with a magnificent nature of rich biodiversity meanwhile the plateau determines dramatic view of natural vegetation that can be divided into three broad divisions which are comprised of evergreen forest, pine forest and grassland.

Noteworthy the sequence of the plateau has stretching from the wettest city Cherrapunji which is one of rainiest spot of the world nevertheless a wide portion of plateau has been rolling down and intersect the northern part of the Shillong.

Rare variety of biospacies are found in the highlands of the plateau that dealing with exotic & endemic species of flora: lichens, mosses and orchids therefore the plateau also consist of some endangered species fauna: endangered leopard, White-beak Vulture, White-winged duck etc reflect the biological environment and the climate of Shillong makes a good energy flow to maintain the stability of natural-functioning  ecosystem.

Nonetheless, the highest peak clothed with oak clumps, chestnuts, magnolia, beech and other trees, shrubs climbs and plants make the plateau physiographically diverse from the forest botanical point of view while the inhabitants of the plateau are belonging to the Mongoloid race whereas on the other hand by nature and practice they are shifting cultivators cultivate their land with complete wasteful forms of their cultivation considering as the main form of agriculture found in the tarrian of Shillong Plateau.
