In this blog I would like to convey my subject oriented knowledge regarding the concept of Rocks with reference to the geological study of Sedimentary rocks.

Know about Definition of Rocks with reference to the importance of Sedimentary rocks

  • Rocks are the smallest component of the lithosphere that is composed of various mineral groups especially silicates, carbonates, sulphides, mental oxides etc. The silicate minerals are very important rock making minerals.
  • Rocks representing the geomaterials of the earth crust are composed of two or minerals.Thereby rocks play very determining role upon the nature and magnitude of erosion because it greatly depends on the structure and composition of the rocks.

According to American geomorphologist W. M. Davis define Rocks as the ' Landscape is a function of structure, process and time stages' lays more emphasis on the dominant role in the evolution of rocks'

"Rocks weather igneous or sedimentary, constitute on the one hand the manuscripts of the past earth history on the other, the basis of contemporary scenery" - S. W. Wooldridge and R.S Morgan.

  • Etymologically,  the word 'Sedimentary' has been derived from Latin language the world sedimentum meaning thereby 'sitting down' as the word implies, are formed due to aggregation and compaction of sediments.

According to P.G. Worcester defined Sedimentary rocks as ' sedimentary rocks as sediments implies, are composed of largely of older rocks and minerals, that have been more or less thoroughly consolidated and arranged in layers and strata.'

  • Sedimentary rocks are deposited due to continuously deposition of sediments in water bodies - lakes, ponds, river, and seas. But they also formed on the land surface due to rocks of sand dunes, alluvial vans and gones.
  • Sediments formed derived from the older rocks, plants and animals because these rocks contains fossils of plants and animals that clarifies the age of the formation of a given Sedimentary rocks determined on the basis of the analysis of the fossils found in that rocks.
  • These rocks are found over the largest surface area the globe because it is believed that about 75 percent of the surface area of the globe is covered by sedimentary rocks.
  • The size of sediments decrease from the littoral margins to the centre of the water bodies where different types of sediments are consolidated and compacted by different types of cementing elements e.g silica iron compounds, calcite, clay etc.
  • Sedimentary rocks contains several layers these are seldom crystalline rocks found in original and horizontal manner. These rocks are may be well consolidated and even unconsolidated. Like igneous rocks sedimentary rocks are not found in massive forms such as botholiths, laccoliths dykes.
