Kumari Kandam refers to a fictional continent located in the south of India in the Indian Ocean that is thought to have existed and was later lost. It is also considered as an important land area associated with the ancient Tamil civilization. The area was also known as Kumarikandam and Kumari Nadu.

The ancient Tamil civilization was on the continent of Ilemuria. These writers claim that the continent was devastated and went into the sea. In the 20th century, Tamil writers used the name 'Kumarik Continent' to describe the submerged continent of Ilemuria. The Ilemuria continental theory became obsolete with the later discovered plate alignment theory. However, this concept continues to be popular among Tamil renaissance writers of the 20th century. According to these scholars, there were two societies formed here by Tamil literary scholars during the reign of the Pandyas who ruled Ilemuria. They say that the Kumari continent is the cradle of Tamil civilization that helps to prove the antiquity of the Tamil language and culture.

Kumarikandam is a phrase used in the Sumerian language 5000 years ago. Its Tamil pronunciation at the time was Kariya Ravana. According to this, the word Kumarikandam existed in the Sumerian civilization 5000 years ago. The first written language in the world was called Sumerian, and it dates back to BC. Evidence of written writing in 3100 has been attributed to the British Encyclopedia. It is not surprising that a group of people from Tamil Nadu thought that the Sumerians were the ancestors and called the Achmeriyar Kumari by name.

The possibility of the presence of the Kumariyaru and Pafuliyaru-produced Merumalai in the Kadasangam is also found in Chinese chronicles (CHRONICLES). A Pandyan king used Chinese slaves to dig gold mines. The literature says that they are ants digging for gold. There is a proverb that the crow from Meru is also called Ponnam. Kachiyappa Sivacharya, who lived between 1350 and 1420, wrote the northern language epic Sikanda Purana under the title Kanda Purana in Tamil. The term Kumarik Continent is used in this epic. Murugan's literary name is Kumaravel Pandian. Ifu Kumarikandamena may have been named after Kumaran's wife Kumariya.

20th century Tamil writers came up with various theories to explain the term Kumarik Kandam or Kumari Nadu. One of them is a set of statements that centralize the existence of the principle of gender equality in the Tamil homeland. For example, in 1944, M.A. The writer Arunachalam says that the land was ruled by female rulers called Kumaris. The women of the land had the custom of choosing their own husbands and the right to own all the property. That is why the region got the name Kumari Nadu, says the writer D. Savarirayan Pillai. The theory of the Kumari continent, centered on the Hindu goddess Kanya Kumari, was also prominent at the time. In one of his books for children, Kandaiya Pillai created a new history for Goddess Kanya Kumari, saying that the land where Kumarik was found was named after the goddess. He said the Kanyakumari temple was established by the survivors when the Kumari continent was inundated. Cultural historian and writer Sumathi Ramasamy says that the word Kumari, which means virgin, refers to pre-existing civilizations and the purity of language associated with ethnic groups such as the Indian Aryans.

Kumarikanda study and current status

The Madurai branch of the High Court has directed the Central and State Governments to respond in October 2020 in the case seeking an inquiry into Kumarikandam.

The judges also asked the court to assist Mr. Orissa Balu, an integrated marine researcher who has been studying Kumarikandam for 15 years.

Following this, the investigator in this case, Mr. Orissa Balu, is now the Amicus curiae who will bring justice to the court.

Following this, the Center for Marine Science and Technology, Manonmaniyam Sundaranagar University, Kanyakumari, with the help of researcher Orissa Balu, is making efforts to conduct a study on Kumarikandam.

A team led by Analyst Orissa Balu is to examine the data of Kumari continent of Tamils in many countries like India, Maldives, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion and submit it to the Madurai branch of the High Court.

The Southern Field Group is responsible for the costs of the beat-up study.
