As we know living green and sustainability is on the rise around the world, but ne thing we all are missing is that Indian household is used to living with these sustainable habits since ages. We inherited these habits from our ancestors and so on. Here are some of the Indian household habits that stand as a great example of sustainable living.

  1. Bucket baths, sun drying clothes and storing water in clay or copper utensils. We have done this and still practice it in many households in India. Even today we can see kids getting there bath outside the house to remove all the dirt and impurities outside of the house itself.
  2. Culinary traditions are also rooted in sustainability such as using the banana leaf for meals and to chutneys made up of vegetables peels. Its just not the plates have an alternative in India but we also prefer to eat with our bare and clean hands rather than using spoon or other cutlery.
  3. Using datun way before bamboo toothbrushes became a thing. Cleanliness has always been our way of living so a way t have white teeth was using the naturally available datun.
  4. Using cloth napkin instead of foil to wrap chapati. Not just the napkin but we also use stick/wood made baskets or holders to keep our chapatis in rather than using a hotpot.
  5. Using ghee as a balm for chapped lips in winter. Beauty ha always been the first priority for women, not all of them but some. And winter is one season where we need to take good care of our skin and poor lips.
  6. Saving millions of toilet paper rolls with one hygienic toilet habit. Us Indians really have a difficult time when abroad, they don't have the best human made gadget.
  7. Using worn out or torn clothes for dusting and mopping. All our old clothes are still somewhere in the corners of our houses. They will be either used as mobs or may be donated if in a really good shape but we will make sure we make maximum use out of it all. Not just that but i have seen women use these old clothes or sarees to make homemade blankets to use in winter.
  8. Besan or turmeric ubtan as the OG facewash and body scrub. Beauty and looking good with a healthy skin is quite necessary. Even today when there is no time for parlor runs women do tend go with some Indian tricks and magic lotions for there skin.

So in terms of everything we Indians have a better way out that shouts sustainability. Hope to carry forward these practices to the next generation as well.

Thankyou🌼
