Privet vsem!

On Christmas Eve, I was watching Один дома (Odin doma) 1 and Один дома 2. They were none other than the Russian versions of the Hollywood films Home Alone 1 and 2. This was a part of watching Russian movies in order to learn about the country as well as language. Therefore, I felt the need of writing about it.

Since I’m yet to watch other modern day Russian films, I decided to write on Soviet era movies. These movies were made by Mosfilm studios and give an insight into the Russian society of the time.

The best part is you just have to type their names on YouTube and you’ll get them, along with the subtitles.Москва слезам не верит (Moskva slezam ne verit)

Moscow does not believe in tears is the number one on my recommendations. Hence, unlike others, I’d like to elaborate a bit. Moscow doesn’t believe in tears is also a Russian proverb which means : Don’t complain, solve your problems on your own. I wasn’t a bit surprised when I read that it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1980.

Each character has a unique personality. The image above almost sums it up! Unfortunately, an interesting one, named ‘Nikolai’ isn’t there in it 😦

Furthermore, Aleksandra is one song that made me fall in love with this film. You can listen to it for yourself.

All in all, it’s a film to watch without delaying.

Операция “Ы” и другие приключения Щурика : Operatsiya “Y” i drugie priklyucheniya shurika

(Operation “Y” and other adventures of Shurik)

Shurik is known to be a helpful but naive type of person. A great example of slapstick comedy, the film is essentially divided into three parts. The third part involves the operation “Y”(a unique sound in Russian). Funniest of all are the nicknames of the trio of criminals : Fool, Coward and Pro.

Кавказская пленница : Kavkazskaya plennitsa

(Kidnapping, Caucasian Style)

Such was the popularity of the earlier film, that Shurik and the funny trio were to be back. This time, the story takes place in the Caucasus region. The plot though is a bit serious, revolving around bride kidnapping, an old tradition practiced in the region.

After that, here are others to watch :

Cамая обаятельная и привлекательная : Samaya obayatelnaya i privlekatelnaya

(The Most Charming and Attractive)

Война и мир : Voyna i mir (War and Peace)

Служебный роман : Sluzhebnyy Roman (Office Romance)

Бриллиантовая рука :Brilliantovaya ruka (The Diamond Arm)

Щит и Меч : Shchit i mech (The shield and The Sword)

Джентльмены удачи : Dzhentlmeny udachi (Gentlemen of Fortune)

…..and many many more…..!

May you fall in love with Russian as well. If not, I’ll share few more interesting things in the new year.

Thank you all readers for an amazing 2020!

S Rozhdestvom i S Novym Godom (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year)!
