‘ Who will cry when I die? ‘ I somehow remembered this sentence when I saw the Marathi movie ’Photo Prem’. We all have a wired fear about our death. We are all concerned about who will remember us after our death. How much will be our existence in their memories? There has to be something that reminds them of the person who is not existing physically among them. That's why there might be the ritual of keeping the photos of the dead person with garland on the wall in his/her family.
The movie revolves around getting that one photo that creates an identity after death. Maee, the main protagonist who is very photophobic since her childhood doesn't have a single solo photo of her. One day, she learns its importance at the funeral of the wife of her husband's colleague. From that day, she starts browsing the photos of demised people in the newspaper and also goes to their funerals. She tries to find one photo of her which can be framed on the wall after her death. Because she understands that the photo only will keep her identity among her loved ones. Her grandchildren will know her through this photo.
And then starts her struggle to get one good photograph to be framed on the wall. She approaches one little girl in her neighborhood who knows how to take pictures on a web camera. After a long session of poses and practice for pics, she finally overcomes her photophobia and then goes to a professional photographer to take one good photo.
The whole journey of the protagonist has been shown in a very engaging and comedy style. The two songs are very meaningful. Neena Kulkarni has given full justice to the character of the main protagonist Maee.
These days where everyone is addicted to selfies, photos, and videos, the subject of overcoming photophobia is very unique. But it does provoke us to think about what memories we can leave behind after our death. Although the movie is of a lighthearted comedy genre, I think it reveals the philosophy of death.
There is no love story or action nor any twists and turns. But still, the story captures you in its simple way till the end. To leave your good memories behind you should have one good photo of yours with a broad smile on your face.
I recommend watching this movie on prime to those who love watching such silent, simple, and philosophical movies.
Thank you for reading! :-)
