Why We Need Quiz Contests In India

People are curious by nature, we ask questions about anything and everything and look for answers, it does not matter which age group we belong to, we like to quiz others.

Children are the best examples, they ask a lot of questions, it feels like we are participating in a quiz, during school time, we answer tests that are like quizzes, they have multiple choice questions and when we are adults we have to go through a number of questions about our professional and personal lives.

At present, the most well known quiz contest is Kaun Banega crorepati, earlier there was the popular Bournvita Quiz contest which has been present for decades.

Here are some of the reasons why we need quiz competitions in India:

  1. Quiz contest as a competition: participating in a quiz contest is not just a way to pass the time, there are many quiz competitions held at places of education where the youth are encouraged to improve their general knowledge.

2. Learning experience: Quiz contests have to be taken in the right spirit, it is an opportunity for improving our knowledge of different subjects and not a place where we think we know it all, just because we got some of the answers correct.

3. Quizzes are associated with tests: In school we use the one word which students hate the most, the word Test, in the American education system, they use quizzes that are another word for tests, you have to be attentive and participate in class or else you lose marks which lowers your grade point average.

4. Workplace quiz: Most companies use quizzes as a way to check the knowledge of the employees, I know from personal experience, being an employee in an information technology organisation, the Human Resources Department sends us email reminder to answer quizzes related to company policy followed with regards to security, password rules, attendance, laws against harassment etc.

5. Quiz apps: Nowadays, there are many quiz apps available online that cover various subjects that test your knowledge, the problem is knowing which apps are genuine and those that are fake as they make false promises that you will win prizes for participating in quiz contest.

6. Bournvita Quiz contest: There was a time when bournvita quiz contest was the most popular show on TV in the 90s, before the coming of cable tv, I remember watching the program every Sunday and then came the reality tv shows which changed viewers habits.

7. Kaun Banega crorepati: About 20 years ago, came Kaun Banega crorepati, a quiz competition hosted by Amitabh Bachchan which got the viewers attention, everyone wanted to know who would be the winner of the ultimate prize.

8. Reality shows: The impact of reality shows on quiz competitions such as Kaun Banega crorepati can be found from the fact that quiz contests focus more on the contestants and less on the learning experience.

In the end, quiz contests are not just for geeks and nerds, it is a family program where one can make use of their time to learn something new and be entertained at the same time.
