Traveling is an essential part of our daily lives, we do it all the time and it maybe for getting to work, going to school or to the market etc. without realising that it can affect our wellbeing.

Research has shown that motion sickness is a serious problem and it affects a significant portion of the population who are unable to adjust to daily travel.

We need to understand what causes motion sickness, there are many theories about it but the best explanation is the one that says we sense motion with our ears and ears, what this means is that our eyes are telling the brain that we are in one place without moving whereas our ears say that we are moving.

There are many indicators that we are suffering from motion sickness such a feeling light headed, suddenly sweating it out even when the weather is pleasant, getting headaches, feeling like vomiting and a continuous sense of tiredness that occurs regardless of how you travel that is by road, air or sea and by car, scooter, aeroplane or boat.

Now that we know some of the causes and the signs, let us learn some of the ways to reduce the effects of motion sickness while traveling:

  1. While traveling whether by car, plane or any other mode of transport, it helps to sit in the front seat as this helps you to focus in the direction that you are traveling.
  2. If the motion sickness is severe and you are finding it difficult to cope with the symptoms, then you need to seek medical help and see a doctor who can prescribe the right medication to control the feeling of motion sickness.
  3. We need to be careful when using perfumes and deodorants with strong and long lasting smells as they are one of the causes of motion sickness.
  4. Those who smoke must take precautions as smoking makes one sensitive to movement while on the road and it can bring about a sudden attack of motion sickness.
  5. We need to make it a point to breathe fresh air while traveling, leaving the air conditioning on in the car while traveling on a long journey during the summer season, leads to circulation of the same air over and over again, which can cause dizziness and being unable to focus, keep the window open and keep out motion sickness.
  6. While traveling, we start using our phone to send messages, play games, listen to music, watch movies etc., which makes you suffer from motion sickness because you are confusing the brain by sending it two different messages at the same time.
  7. We need to keep a check on our diet, those who suffer from motion sickness should avoid heavy meals that includes oily and spicy foods which may cause vomiting and stomach upset, it is better to eat freshly cooked home food to avoid motion sickness.

Motion sickness is something that is still a mystery and experts have not been able to come up with a theory that explains why we get motion sickness, it is upto the individual to take steps to prevent motion sickness and find out what works best for them.
