Werewolves, literally translated as man wolves are mythical creatures that have existed for centuries, especially in Europe, where people have always been fascinated by the idea of man changing to wolf and causing death and destruction wherever it goes.
It is believed that man changes shape when he is bitten by a wolf which results in a man with the characteristics of a wolf, furthermore, whenever there is a full moon, man transforms to wolf.
There are many books and movies that are based on werewolves, where we witness the superhuman powers that werewolves possess as they kill anyone who crosses their path with extreme force and power that makes them fearsome creatures.
Let us take a look at some of the reasons why it is difficult to separate the myth of werewolves from reality:
A) There have been many studies done on the subject of werewolves but experts are unable to come to a definite conclusion on the origin of the belief, the most common explanation is that early man lived in groups which is similar to the way wolves live in packs.
B) In fact, early man believed that wearing clothing made of the fur of the wolf made them stronger and gave them leadership qualities to lead as head of the group.
C) During the dark ages in Europe, people were superstitious and they believed in the supernatural powers of animals and even worshipped them, whenever their cattle were attacked they would blame it on wolf attacks without any evidence.
D) Furthermore, it was here that the belief originated, where it was thought that a man who was bitten by a wolf became like a wolf and attacked animals as well as humans.
E) It is also believed that the person bitten by a wolf changes shape when you came into contact with someone who is already infected or something that was used by the werewolf such as food, drink etc.
F) There are a certain changes that takes place in people who are bitten by wolves such as having more hair all over the body like the fur of a wolf, longer fingernails, thick facial hair and having difficulty walking upright like a normal human being.
G) It does not matter if it is books, comics, movies or cartoons, all these mediums of entertainment contain stories that have added to the legend of the werewolf, in fact being a werewolf has such a strong impression on some people that they wrongly believe that they can change shape and become werewolves.
H) Another misconception about werewolves is that the reason why people change into wolves is because they are in the control of the devil who send them to harm others whenever possible.
Although, we consider ourselves to be civilized, educated and sophisticated, the myth that werewolves exist despite the fact that they have never been proven to be a reality, shows that people will believe what they want to believe even if it is not based on rational thought.
The obsession with werewolves will not go away any time soon, as long as there are stories about them, these fearsome beasts will continue to be a part of popular culture.
