The Invention Of Zero In India

The number Zero is used to indicate nothing and yet it means everything, the binary system is based on ones and zeroes, a zero here and there can have a different meaning, making a mistake while counting money can have adverse consequences.

The concept of zero which forms the basis of the numerical system that we use, was according to historical accounts was invented by Aryabhatta, one of the greatest Indian mathematician that ever lived.

While Zero was used for hundreds of years in Ancient India making it one of the most advanced countries of the world in the field of knowledge, the word zero was first used by the English in the 16 th century.

Every number is either positive or negative, what makes zero unique is that it is neutral and it does not matter if you add, subtract, multiply or divide zero by itself, the answer is still zero.

Grownups take it for granted that zero is used to indicate nothing, studies have shown that children find it difficult to understand the meaning of zero and when asked what is the smallest number, they say that one is the smallest number.

The invention of zero is important because it made counting easier, in fact computers as we know it would not exist without the zero that is used in the binary system.

We have studied the Roman numeral system, which does not have a symbol to indicate zero, because they believed that they did not need to represent something that did not exist.

In the Western world, everything is seen as good or evil, it was said that God created everything that we experience in the world, this means that to claim that there is nothing is wrong.

It took a long time for people to accept zero , consider the alternatives, without using zero, there would be no civilization, the decimal system would be missing and there would be no accurate way to make calculations.

The binary system made it possible for us to use computers because it uses the two number system of one's and zeroes, in mathematics, we find zero is used to to make calculations easier.

We have ten fingers, when we start counting, we start from use one to ten and not zero to nine, in the binary system we use zero and one to make calculations.

Computer logic is different from human thinking, we follow a number system that counts from one to ten, whereas computers understand the binary system of zero and one, this makes it possible for computers to interpret data easily.

Another interesting fact about zero is its clear definition as a number as compared to infinity which means no end, one cannot put a definite value to infinity whereas zero can be used by itself or with other numbers with value such as ten, one hundred and two or one hundred and twenty.

In the end, zero plays an important part in every aspect of our lives, a zero added or subtracted can have a major impact, it can take us from zero to hero and vice versa.
