Today's world is all about numbers and scores, whether it is education or the workplace everything is like an equation, it can be said that figures speak louder than words.
This is true about all aspects of our lives including our health, where everything calculated and is given a numerical value. For example we have fitness apps that measure and calculate the number of glasses of water we drink, the number of hours we spend sitting down, walking, jogging, exercising, sleeping etc.
It is easy to have a false sense of security and assume that we are strong and nothing can have a negative impact on our health, the reality is that unlike the superheroes in comic books we do not have any super powers that will give us unlimited strength to fight diseases and health problems and survive without any after effects.
There are some factors that we need to take into consideration that help to keep a track of our wellbeing:
A) Research has shown that we need to keep our waistline approximately below 36 inches, this reduces the chances of suffering from serious illnesses such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes etc.
B) We need to participate in physical activities for at least 3 to 4 hours per week, this could be anything from walking, taking the stairs, playing football, cricket or working out at the gym, as per what works best for you.
C) Our daily food intake should consist of at least 500 grams of fruits and vegetables, besides protein and vitamins as this helps to reduce the risk of suffering from health problems.
D) When we indulge in smoking, as the advertisement goes, smoking is not just injurious to health it can deduct years from our lives, sometimes more than 10 years on average.
E) We need to keep our blood pressure at 120/80 mmHg, when it goes higher it can interfere with the normal functioning of the brain and the heart which puts our lives at risk.
F) Although it differs from person to person, it helps to get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep daily, this cuts down the feeling of tiredness, irritability and suffering from serious health problems.
G) We can find out how healthy we really are by comparing our biological age with our how old we are, for example a person who is 50 years of age could be living the life of a 30 year old, assuming that he is mentally and physically in good condition, on the other hand there are people who are 20 years old and are living like a 40 year old, this indicates that they are not taking good care of themselves.
There are some things that cannot be measured in numbers, for example we cannot calculate the amount of stress that we go through daily or how happy we are with what we do, although it helps to understand our wellbeing, it is not easy to quantify health into an equation but it does help to keep a score of what keeps you in good health.
