In today's world, the effects of climate change can be felt daily, temperatures are rising, the monsoon is not on time and deforestation is taking place faster than we can imagine.

This is where a garden is like a breath of fresh air, it is a place with greenery, where we can take a break from the daily pressures of life and children can play and have fun.

Gardens serve an important purpose, they bring us closer to nature and make us feel alive, unfortunately most cities are filled with skyscrapers and there is no open space which can be utilised as a garden.

The concept of gardening has existed in India for thousands of years, there is evidence that people used gardens as a place to pray and practice yoga because of the peaceful and pleasant atmosphere that keeps you calm and free of distractions from the outside world.

Historical records show that ancient Indian civilization had great respect for plants and were considered a part of how they lived their lives.

We like to call ourselves civilized but ancient India was much more knowledgeable about nature and their cities were designed in such a way that there was enough space for gardens.

Gardening is also mentioned in the ancient stories and drawings which show gardens that have flowers and plants that gives us an idea of how much value was attached to greenery in India.

Unfortunately, in today's day and age, gardening is forgotten, plants are being destroyed rapidly due to overpopulation and gardens have become a commercial enterprise.

Most of the gardens have boards and posters which tells us that it was built by a particular politician and we have to be grateful to them and for the upkeep of the garden, we are supposed to pay for visiting these open spaces.

There are many laws, that prohibits destruction of mangroves and green areas but nothing is being done about it, the government collects taxes from us but takes no action to maintain the gardens that are essential to keep the environment green and clean.

People lead hectic lives and most of their time is spent commuting and at work, they have little time for themselves, gardens are not on their list of priorities.

Moreover, most people living in buildings which has limited space and advertisements for flats talk about the modern amenities of life such as gymnasium, swimming pool etc. but they conveniently ignore having a garden even if there is space for it, they would rather have a paid car parking area instead of a garden where you can breathe fresh air.

People are afraid of gardens because they are a breeding ground for insects, the reality is that where there is greenery there are animals, birds and insects, they cannot be stopped but we can prevent the spread of diseases from mosquitoes and rats by keeping our surroundings clean.

In the end, we need to educate ourselves about the benefits of gardens, we must learn to appreciate their value and realise that by destroying plants, we are reducing our life span and harming ourselves.
