Not everyone can relate to the extreme pleasure we get when we find a dress with pockets. Yes! We're deprived of many basic things and the need for pockets is one of them.
Surprisingly, Pockets first began appearing on waistcoats and trousers about 500 years ago. In the late 1600s pockets were a separate garment for women that tied between a skirt and petticoat. These were especially for working women as they could hold enough money. By this, we knew that women and men used to wear pockets equally.
Later in the 1800s, the trend started to shift pockets became smaller and useless. The craze drifted to Handbags that were pinned or attached to a belt. Eventually, finances were handled by husbands and from there, Purses took off. Pockets disappeared from women clothing continued to be a fixture on men's tailoring. Until the 1920s women started the new trend of boyish cuts and men's wear inspired looks which gained popularity with criticism too. In the mid-1900s pockets were shallow that couldn't hold more than a key. Later jeans came along which went from rugged workwear to fashion apparel that we couldn't live without.
Okay! It's the 21st century and we've got some pockets but will they fit my smartphone?
Pockets are great. They're perfect for putting your hands into whenever you feel awkward in a social situation. They can hold change, candy whenever you need it, But not all clothes are sewn equally. Libert, equality, and justice for all do not apply to all clothing especially to women clothing. Either we have don't have pockets at all or they're too small than men's or they're all fake. We don't always want to carry things in our hands especially our phones and with the increase in bulky smartphones, we definitely need bigger pockets. When we wear a dress with pockets our hands naturally gravitate to the pockets as it's just comfortable. They're so many dresses that support pockets but don't have them.
There are many reasons as to why women have no pockets or small and faux pockets which people believe in. Some say it was a way to keep women powerless as they cant carry things with smaller pockets and travel independently. In addition, to designers who believe fashion is more important than function.
This is something women have railed against for a long time and when we look back at history, what we're really asking for is Equality.
