1.Turkmenistan's door to hell :Located in the karakum Desert, 160 miles north of Turkmenistan capital, Ashgabat is a nine metre wide and thirty metre deep crater burning since 1971 and commonly known as “door to hell”.
It is supposedly believed that soviet scientists had set up a drilling rig here for extraction of natural gas. But the rig collapsed and poisonous gas fumes of methane began spilling out so to stop methane gas from dissolving into the air it was set on fire. It's been burning there ever since. Recently Turkmenistan president Garbanguly Berdymukhamedou instructed officials on the 8th January 2022 to find ways to extinguish fire at “Gateway to Hell” citing ecological concerns. Earlier too people have tried to extinguish it but none have succeeded till date. Let's hope for the best.
2.The lake natron :The infamous lake natron is an alkaline lake located in North Ngorongori district of Arusha region in Tanzania in the Gregory Rift. Natron lake is a Salt Lake in an island lake without an outflow. It was formed because ,since the water can only disappear by evaporation leaving behind the dissolved salts in the water .This is how a lake with a high concentration of salt was formed.
This lake seemingly turns all sorts of animals into stone. The pink body of water is a huge attraction both to humans as well as birds especially flamingo. Most of the flamingo meet their death as soon as they touch the lake water but most of the times it depends on the variability of concentrated salt. Due to high levels of evaporation, natron is composed of hydrated sodium carbonate. Also from surrounding hills, sodium carbonate and other minerals flow into lake. All these factors can lead to a PH greater than twelve. In periods with a high evaporation level the salinity rises to a level at which salt living microorganisms thrives like certain type of cyanobacteria. Salt crust on the surface often gets a red or pink tint from these bacteria. Besides the high and variable salinity level, the temperature of water or the lake can rise up to 60 degree centigrade making the lake furthermore inhospitable for most animals.
