Yakut village is located in Serbia and is considered as one of the most sparsely populated and coldest village of the World where temperature can go down to -70 degree Celsius.
People living there needs a lot of Woods to heat the house for nine months. Each resident burns more than 60 cubic metre of wood on average every winter. Almost all the houses are made of wood and to keep the house warm in order to protect it from the freezing air they fill every gap with snow. Just like a desert drinking water in Yakut village is precious . There are no water treatment facilities because the pipes freeze during the long winters,so ice is the main source of water. The villagers harvest the ice from the river in the middle of November.
In yakutia,due to the harsh climate it is almost impossible to grow fruits and vegetables,so most of the Yakut desserts consists of dairy food.Hunting and fishing are the two main sources to feed one's family in Yakut. People there love eating fish and meat, in raw Frozen,boiled or fried state. From the early spring until the autumn's end the yakut's eat fish .
In Yakutia there are no indoor toilets because the pipes freeze easily. The children in Yakutia goes to school when it's warmer than -54 degree centigrade but when the temperature drops below -55 degree centigrade,it becomes too dangerous to go to school. While going outside, it is an absolute must to wear several layers of clothing and insulated pants. The exposed parts of body are prone to frost bite. The temperature outside becomes too cold that it forms a icicles on the eyelashes. Only 10 mins of staying outside can cause stinging pain in the face, long lasting aches in the fingers and toes. The knees are particularly prone to freezing. Eating regularly is essential to in cold winters . It's a closed knit community and there are about only eighty people living in the whole village.
The yakutian horses can cope with temperature down to -70 degree Celsius. Most men in the village are engaged in cattle breeding, hunting or crafts. For many centuries knives have played an important role in the lives and culture of Yakut people, and their knives are well appreciated around the World for it's strength and beauty.
Life in Yakutia can be difficult and harsh to tolerate but the people there have learnt to live in harmony with mother nature and appreciate it's beauty.
