Hunger kills more people each year than AIDS, malaria and terrorism combined. One third of the food produced around the world is never consumed. Hunger goes way beyond borders, religion and politics. This problem is not unique only to India, it is spread world wide. Hunger is affecting 9.9% of people globally. Eleven people die of hunger each minute around the world. Though the proportion of undernourished people in the world has declined from 15% in 2000-2004 to 8.9% in 2019,it still remains a major problem. Upto 811 million people are going hungry ,more than two billion suffer from malnutrition worldwide.
Particularly talking about India, India was ranked 101 out of 116 countries in the recently released global hunger index .7000 Indians die of hunger related disease each night. There is no lack of food worldwide but access to that surplus food is the problem. Here in India 40% food produced gets wasted and thrown away .logistics can and will provide the solution is what the founder of Robin Hood Army thinks.
Neel Ghose was Inspired by Portugal V food, where volunteers would collect excess food in free time from restaurants and distributed it to less fortunate people .He found this idea simple and doable. Neel thus set up Robin Hood Army in August 26,2014 along with his friend Anand - a volunteer based ,zero fund organisation which collects excess food from restaurants and distributes it to the less fortunate. The organisation consists of over 78,262 volunteers in two hundred four cities and have served food to over sixty six point seventeen million people so far.
Volunteers are known as robins, they are young professionals and students from every walks of life, they do this in free time. They work on a very simple model and is hyper local in nature. It's a simple platform for regular people who want to help and think less and do more.Basically they collect left over foods from restaurants, weddings, and people who volunteer. Neel Ghose while sharing his experience highlighted at the generosity of the Restaurant owners who were kind enough that instead of giving excess food they actually gave freshly cooked foods.
Robin Hood army was a person wake up call for Neel and his co-founder anand. Besides giving food, they are in business of spreading smiles. In July 2016 this army has Started Robin Hood academy and has empowered nearly 7300+ street children with basic primary education. According to their data as of February 2021 they have managed to get 1800 school admissons for street children across 102 cities. Isn't this heartily humane!!!
