Amidst the land of Himalayas lies the cleanest village of Asia Mawlynnong village. Mawlynnong is a remote village located in the state of Meghalaya,which is the land of mesmerizing scenic beauty formed of high hills and undulating streams and waterfalls. The village is which is often referred to as the god's own garden is around ninety kilometres away from shillong. Meghalaya the abode of clouds is inhabited by the khasis, jayantiyas and the garos tribes. It was declared as the cleanest village in Asia in the year 2003 by the travel magazine “ Discover India”.
Since the village is best known for it's eco tourism intiative it attracts tourists from all over the world. The community makes collective efforts to maintain it's cleanliness, greenery and sustainability. For this on any given day villagers from each household collect wastes and dump it in the dustbin and these dustbins are environment friendly as they are made from Bamboo. This habit of not only keeping their compound clean but also the roads and surrounding was passed down to them from their forefathers. Keeping their surrounding cleaning has now become their custom . The whole community living there follows the same path and has same amount of inclination towards cleanliness. And they are instilling the same habits in the next generation.
The village has about ninety three households and their main source of livelihood and income solely depends on agriculture and plantations. They plant bay, betel leaves and varieties of fruits like black pepper, sweet fruits, also fruits like oranges, banana and many more. The entire community is too passionate about gardening and one visiting their can witness a variety of exotic flora unique to that region only. Every tribe living there is close to the nature and this is reflected in their day to day lifestyle. Apart from regular maintenance of cleanliness in their surrounding the community comes together and organises day long cleaning drive. This tradition has been followed for generation and is maintained even Today. Their ability to keep the village clean is because of their unity as it is rightly said strength lies in unity. All the inhabitants and the neighbours takes responsibility of cleaning their own surroundings and compounds. Through everyone effort and hardwork the village is reputed for it's cleanliness and has earned a place in the world's tourism map. One should try to adopt their way of sustainable living.
