Who are leftover women::- the women above the age of twenty-seven , unmarried , highly highly educated and the ones who live in urban area qualifies to fall under this category are known as “Sheng -nu” or left over women in China. The term was coined by a chinese government organisation responsible for the protection and promotion of women's rights and policies in the year 2007. So basically if a female in China is in her late 20's and unmarried then they are regarded as leftovers and this is pretty uncommon.
So in order to avoid this tag of “leftover” hundreds of parents gather at a park every weekend since 2004 in hopes of finding potential marriage partner for their children. Almost every city in China has a market like this. If a female is not married by the age of twenty six the Chinese government forces them to marry uneducated rural laboures or “left over men” .If you are woman over thirty years you may no longer be welcome in China's dating market.
In China a woman of thirty is seen as she's past the point, means she is too old to be seen as wife material. In actual dating market they are termed as “leftover goods” that no one wants. It's indeed sad to see people comparing women to “goods”. To them her education, her degree, her career plans outweighs one key flaw- she is not married at such a “late” age. But if she would have been twenty five and then possessed such a high degree of education then she would have been viable as marrying material. People at country side basically the old folk believe"A woman's virtues lies in her lack of talent". They believe it's not good for girl's to have too much education because by the time a girl finishes her master's degree she will be over thirty and that's when she invites trouble for herself. They believe more educated a woman is the less tolerable she is.
The importance of carrying on the blood line , the family lineage is a matter of concern not only for China but it's prevalent in every corner of the world. And if you do not follow the tradition you end up becoming ‘left over".But viewing women only as a means of preserving one’s lineage is awful. And in India too we have flag bearers “ for right marriage age for girls” . But thankfully there is no involvement of government for the same unlike China.
