Rabindranath Tagore is an eminent writer, philosopher, scholar of Bengali literature as well as the world literature. He is also a social reformer and we all know that he refused to accept the title of Knighthood, bestowed by the contemporary British Government in his protest against the Jaliwanwala Bagh massacre. However, he himself had written once that he will remain in the heart of the people through his own songs, commonly known as “Rabindra Sangeet". Basically, the philosophy, the thought lurking behind these songs are deep and allow us to embark on the new sense of higher consciousness.
Plethora of emotions are aptly woven into the beautiful lyrics of his songs. Many songs that are framed as “swadedhi parjay “(patriotic songs)are brimming with the fiery emotion of patriotism. There is an constant inspiration to go forward, to step forward keeping aside the mourning of failure. Before Independence, many bengalee youth got the undaunted encouragement through his songs that belong to “swadeshi parjay".
If we look at the songs of “puja parjay “(songs dedicated to God or devotional songs) and “prem parjay"(songs of love),we will understand that these two genre of songs are infused with each other in such a way that it is hard to identify specifically which one is puja parjay and which one is prem parjay. Sometimes, we feel that the poet laureate is dedicating love to the Bramha that is the Almighty. Sometimes the devotional songs themselves become the living embodiment of love. Spirituality is the prime essence of such songs. There is a state of tranquillity through the complete surrender to the Omnipotent. The self within us is getting united with the self of the Supreme and this identification of the self with the power of the Brahma constitutes the core of many Tagore songs. His songs give us the scope of looking at our own core to realise the mystic bond between us and the Universe.
The songs under “prakriti parjay “(songs dedicated to Nature) are a beautiful tribute to the aesthetic aspects of each season of nature. The eternal spring of love for nature is quite evident in these songs. According to Rabindranath Tagore, men learn most amid the nature. A learner must be in a natural environment to accomplish his education. Santiniketan(His own academic establishment) is a living testament of his own theory of naturalism.
“Bichitra parjay “songs are another genre where Tagore has experimented with foreign music. Tagore,in his lifetime, visited many countries across the globe and got acquainted with their cultures. Therefore, he tried to assimilate their culture with his own music. “Bichitra parjay “songs bear testimony of this radical experiments.
I find Tagore songs as the solace in time of distress, a soothing embalming from the crisis. There is a word-catharsis,meaning purgation of emotion. Tagore songs act as that purifier that cleanses my soul and opens the gate of rufuge when every door is closed.
