In Venice, retired professional safecracker John Bridger telephones his daughter Stella Bridger to inform her that he will engage in his final robbery. John then meets with Charlie Croker, the professional fixer, before beginning the theft. Their crew consists of themselves and four others: Wheelman Handsome Rob is a getaway driver, Left Ear is an explosives specialist, Steve is the "inside man," and Lyle, or "Napster,” is a technical expert who makes up the crew. John Bridger and his team intend to steal $35 million in gold bullion from a safe in Venice that Italian thieves had taken weeks before. Although the heist is successful, Steve betrays them as they drive to Austria with the bullion. He steals it and murders John with the help of another team. Rob drives the vehicle over the bridge into the river to shield the others, relying on air tanks from theft for survival. Steve abandons them for dead.

A year later, Stella,  a talented private safety specialist, is assisting law enforcement officers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by breaking into vaults with her safe-cracking expertise. The crew has located Steve, who, under a new identity, is laundering the gold through Ukrainian jeweler Yevhen to fund his extravagant lifestyle in Los Angeles. Charlie encourages Stella to assist the squad in stealing the gold from him because she possesses the necessary talent and motivation. Charlie organizes the team and recruits John's daughter, Stella, allowing her to avenge her father's death. The crew heads to Los Angeles, California, to commence surveillance of Steve's home and plot the robbery. Meanwhile, Steve tries to sell his bullion to a money launderer little by little. Left Ear cut out all cable connections in Steve’s house. The team's initial plan is to have Stella pose as a cable repair woman to gain access to Steve's house and locate his safe, which contains the bullion. The mission is successful, and when she departs, Steve, unaware of Stella's identity, asks her on a date. The idea is to  break into Steve's house, blow up the safe, load the gold while Steve is away on his purported date, and move the gold out of the estate in three substantially modified Mini Coopers. Mechanic Wrench alters the automobiles, and Napster hacks L.A.’s automated traffic surveillance to escape.

On Steve's final visit to Yevhen, Yevhen unwittingly confesses his knowledge of the Venice theft. To cover his tracks, Steve murders him. Mashkov, the leader of a Ukrainian Mafia family and Yehven's cousin wants retribution for his cousin's murder. Charlie meets Skinny Pete to buy some supplies needed for the explosion. Mashkov traces the gold back to Skinny Pete through Yevhen's former employee, Vance.

On the night of the planned heist, the crew discovers that Steve's neighbors are hosting a party, forcing them to abort because the explosives will attract attention. Stella still has to meet Steve, but she unwittingly reveals her identity by uttering her father's catchphrase. The squad arrives to protect her, and Steve taunts them, claiming he still has the upper hand, and vows to collect the stolen gold.

As Napster discovers from his phone tap, Steve intends to move the gold to Mexico City via an armored car on a private plane from LAX. Charlie and his group devised a new plan to steal the gold en route to the airport by controlling the city's traffic management system, forcing the armored car to a predetermined location where they would carry out the crime. Skinny Pete informs Charlie that Mashkov is after gold and the murderer. The team is in a position to execute their plan. Now that he knows Charlie and his men are still alive, Steve relocates the gold.

They are astonished to see three armored trucks depart Steve's estate. To counter the shell game, Charlie utilizes Lyle's influence over the Los Angeles traffic system to isolate the one truck carrying the gold, which Lyle eventually locates and gridlocks the city. Steve monitors the transport via helicopter. They maneuver the automobile to the intended location and use explosives to dump the car and a portion of the road into the subway tunnel below. Opening the vehicle, they discover the gold in a different safe than the one that previously contained it. Stella struggles initially, but eventually cracks it open and divides the $27 million in gold among the three Mini Coopers. They speed from the tube to the Los Angeles River and into the city, chased by Steve's motorcycle gang, with Napster forming a green wave to avoid traffic. Steve and his hired security guards pursue them around Los Angeles, and the team eventually loses all of them, except Steve.

Stella, Handsome Rob, and Left Ear travel to Union Station, while Charlie pulls Steve away on his helicopter. Steve tries to kill him by having his helicopter pilot demolish Charlie's Mini Cooper, but the chopper's tail rotor is damaged, causing it to crash. Steve steals a Ford Bronco and follows Charlie to Union Station, where the automobiles are placed onto a train car with the help of Wrench, he tries to bribe Wrench to let him in, but Charlie and the others are already waiting. When Steve takes out a gun and demands the gold, Mashkov and his armed men disarm him.

Steve pursues Charlie and falls into a trap: Charlie has previously notified the Ukrainians that Steve is the guy they are seeking, and Charlie gives them a chunk of the stolen gold.  Charlie explains that he promised Mashkov a portion of the gold and Steve in exchange for assistance with security (it is believed that Skinny Pete got them in touch). Stella strikes Steve in the face as retaliation. Mashkov then takes him away, hinting that he does not want to murder him but rather torment him for killing Yevhen. The gang boarded the train bound for New Orleans and celebrated in John's honor.

The squad spends its share of the gold for their preferred purposes: Handsome Rob purchases an Aston Martin Vanquish and is pulled over by a lovely policewoman. Left Ear purchases a home in Andalusia that includes a room for his shoe collection. Napster buys a powerful stereo capable of blowing a woman's clothes off and Charlie takes John's advice about finding someone he wants to spend the rest of his life with and travels to Venice with Stella.
