Sagar visited his village back again and this time to get married. The girl that his parents had chosen for him was uneducated, she had never seen the face of school, she had no choice but to get married. After marriage she stayed with her parents in law in village and when she started menstruating she was sent with Sagar to the city. Within one year of living with her husband she gave birth to a daughter, another year another daughter, then next year one more daughter followed by yet another daughter. Sagar was infuriated as he wanted a son but instead he was stuck with 4 daughters. With his second daughter a twin son was also born but he succumbed to death within days. Sagar decided to take his wife whose name was Lali and his 4 daughters namely Maya, Saroj, Kamla and Pushpa to village. People had started talking. Everybody was laughing on Sagar for he had four daughters. Lali was blamed for it. She would cry every time begging God for a son. Her life was miserable. Few months passed and Lali was pregnant again. Scared of birthing a daughter again she would secretly pray for a son, when one day while she was busy in the kitchen Saroj came running to her that there's a new bride outside their door. Nobody in their village was about to get married that day. Lali ran out to check whose new bride has come and to her shock Sagar had remarried.
An uneducated women with four daughters with no sign of a bright future couldn't even ask her husband why he did what he did. What if Sagar throws her out of the house? What will she do? How will she feed her daughters? Why is man so priviliged to marry again and think of a woman as nothing but a child bearing machine? She couldn't feel the land beneath her feet. All she could see was her husband standing with a girl just five six years elder to his eldest daughter Maya. All the men standing besides Sagar as according to them Sagar was right. Every body wants a son and as Lali was unable to give Sagar a boy, Sagar married another girl 22 years younger to him named Saru. As if he was sure that Saru will give him a son. Lali couldn't take it she decided to kill herself and her daughters too. She grabbed all her daughters, stormed into her room and tried to hang themselves up when people saved them all. Everybody asked Sagar to apologize to Lali, as for them a sorry was enough. Sagar apologized. Promised that whatever big decisions he will take in his life he will discuss it with Lali first. Lali will always be first. Lali knew promises are never fulfilled but she had no other option. She couldn't go back to her parents, she was helpless. She gave in. Few months later she gave birth again, and this time it was a boy. After 4 daughters Lali finally had a son. Only if sagar could have waited. By this time Saru was also pregnant. Sagar decided to take saru with him to the city. But what will Saru do there alone? So he ordered his daughters to get ready and pack their things, but he didn't ask Lali to come along. Maya, Saroj, Kamla and Pushpa didn't want to leave their mother in village. They started crying. Lali asked her husband to let the kids stay with her so Sagar said okay, then you can also educate them yourself and get them married also. Helplessly she told her daughters to go with their father and their new mother.
On reaching city the sisters were scared of Saru because they believed that their mother's place was taken by someone else. They were kids but the scenarios that they had witnessed in their home had made them very mature. Saru had also come from a very poor background. Her parents were happy that they had to do nothing and yet their daughter was married. And now was in the city. She was ruling and living her life. She would order the daughters to cook for her and clean for her. But also knew that if Sagar will ask his kids then the kids will speak the truth. So as soon as Sagar would come home in the evening she would tell him how much his daughters lie, how they don't work at all. How great a man is Sagar and she couldn't believe Sagar has such dumb daughters. Sagar had always loved flattery. He thought people praise him because they admire him but people actually praised him to take benefits out of him. He was easy to fool and that's what Saru did. Saru was scared that if Sagar gives everything of his to his daughters and new born son then she will be left with nothing.
