Biotechnology is a popular branch of Study nowadays. Here, we try to create some new biological things and also make changes in the genetic makeup (DNA). Now, you think it's very cool, right?? Yes, you are right it is very cool, but there is also a problem, this process is not too easy as it is pronounced. In 1969 Scientist Herbert Boyer performed studies on a couple of restriction enzymes of the E.Coli.
It is the Starting of this new concept of biotechnology. After that Scientist, Stanley Cohen also developed a method of biotechnology. They invented "plasmid", It is a kind of vector that is used in this process.
Actually, the method of biotech. is very complicated. Firstly, we identify a gene which we use as our desired product then we attach that gene with a plasmid. Plasmid here acts as a vector or vehicle. Then we transfer that plasmid to our desired plant or animal......WOW!! I think it is very difficult to understand for a non-science background student.
Let me explain this in a very simple way.
See in India we are very much fascinated about eating, So, we try to invent various types of food item. In fact, sometimes we reinvent some delicious dishes.
Like mixed biriyani, mixed noodles, mixed panipuri, etc. Think if you want to make mixed biriyani (like - chicken + mutton), then you will mix chicken and mutton both and then cook. And by this, you will be able to taste both flavors in one item. So, it is one type of variety and by making this you just reinvent something and make human life easier.
So, in Biotech. we use this technique.
Let's imagine a plant that has much economic importance, but a disease or an insect comes and destroys that plant then it is not GOOD naa!!
So, to resolve this problem we developed the method of biotechnology. First, we try to find a gene that is resistant to that insect or disease. Then we attach that gene with the plasmid and transfer the plasmid to that plant. As a result, the disease-resistant gene will enter the plant body and get mixed with the genes of the plant. Then the plant will not be affected by the insect or disease.
You can find many examples of this method on the internet. Like many dicot or monocot plants.
We can use this method to enhance the quality of the food like Golden rice. By increasing the amount of vitamin A, we increase the nutritional value of golden rice. So, these are the examples of applications of Biotech in plants.
Now you are thinking "Can we use this method in animals??, then I will make me disease-free human...and lots of things". So, the answer is yes, we can use this in various animals. But the application of this method in humans is more complicated, research is still going on. You may see some of the examples of Biotech in the human body in Hollywood movies named "Mutant". But it is totally imagination till now. We used Biotech. to make artificial insulin. First Eli Lily company made artificial insulin in 1983. Scientists also tried some experiments on gene therapy and they got successful results in 1990 (ADA gene transplant).
You may hear the name "ROSIE", a cow. Scientists developed this cow and the feature of this cow is that it gives highly protein-enriched milk. So, you may think Biotech is very awesome. But every aspect has a bad side also. Scientists developed ‘Flavr saver tomato’, which is big in size and disease resistant but the taste is very bad.
So, research is still going on. Scientists are working day and night to improve the method of Biotechnology.
So, learners (/readers of this article) get ready to be a part of this exciting journey.
