Rainwater is the the main source of freshwater on the Earth. Some rain water seeps into to ground and gets collected between rocks under the ground. This water is called Groundwater. Groundwater is made to use by digging Wells and hand pumps. Rainwater fills ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, seas and oceans. Dams and canals are are build to use water in rivers. Snow on the top of mountain melts to change into to water and flows down as streams. Small streams join to form a big river.
2) HOW DO WE GET RAIN?
Water in rivers, lakes, ponds, and seas gets heated due to sunlight and it evaporates into the air as water vapour. The process by which water changes to water vapour is called Evaporation. Water vapour cools down to form small water droplets on rising up up in the air. The process by which water vapour changes to water is called Condensation. Here, water droplets mix with dust and other things to form clouds. This tiny water droplets join two form bigger drops inside the clouds. When water drops in the cloud become too heavy to remain in the air, they fall as rain. In places that are very cold, water drops freeze into to ice and come down as snow. The continuous cycle involving the change of water into to water vapour and then to water again is called Water Cycle.

3) PLANTS NEED WATER:
You have read that roots of a plant absorb water along with nutrients from the soil. This water is then transported to leaves through the stem where it is is used by leaves to make food for the plant. Plants give out the extra water in them through small openings on their leaves. This helps plants to keep cool. Plants that live in in water are called Aquatic Plants. There are some plants like Lotus and water lilies that grow in shallow water. Hydrilla grows at the bottom of ponds and lakes. Duckweed and water hyacinth float on the surface of the water. Some types of algae even grow in oceans. Most of these plants are light and can float on water. Although deserts are dry and get very little rain, plants grow there ,too. Even in deserts, water is found in some places. Such a place is called an Oasis. Plants such as a Date Palm grow in an oasis. Other plants that grow in deserts are Cacti. The stem of a cactus plant is thick and flashy.
4) ANIMALS NEED WATER:
Like all other living beings, animals need water to digest their food. They need water to remove waste from the body. Animals need water for drinking. They also get water from food they eat. In forests, animals gather at waterholes to drink water. Pets and domestic animals must be given clean drinking water everyday. Animals like fish, octopuses and sea turtles that live in water are called Aquatic Animals. They have special body parts to move ,breathe and feed and water. Just like some plants grow in desert , some animals ,too , live in desert. The camel can be found in the desert. It is called "Ship Of The Desert". It's body is suitable for life in desert. It can walk comfortably on sand. A camel can go without water for 20 days. Smaller animals like desert rats and snakes live on the dew that collects on desert plant.
4) FACT CORNER:
Water from rivers can be used to to produce electricity. It is is called as "Hydroelectricity".
