The month of June in India doesn't come with many festivals to celebrate. But aren't we fortunate enough that back in 1974 UN (United Nations) had decided to celebrate 5th June as the World Environment Day (WED). As Indians, we are taught to carry forward the legacy of each festival as each one it signifies some of the vital aspects of Life. Similar to other festivals the WED signifies the mother Nature. WED might not be an ancient festival, rather many of us might even not consider it as a one, but the coming generation including some of us would definitely love to celebrate mother Nature. Well talking about Environment collectively, it includes numerous areas that are needed to be taken care of viz. pollution, waste management, noise control, but the most important of all is WATER. We all, sometimes in our childhood, might have heard or read this line “Earth is made up of 97% water and 3% land, out of which only 1% is usable water.” And also we read that “Water is a renewable resource"-meaning it can be naturally replenished. As a child I always thought that these two statements contradict eachother. But as I grew up and started to learn about it more and more, I learned that the word “Only 1%” has a very frightening meaning. Out of all this water available on Earth only few amount is usable, so we Humans developed various ways to convert this saline sea water into the usable one. The very convenient method developed for this purpose is Reverse Osmosis (RO). In the process of RO osmotic pressure is applied that retains all the unwanted impurities on a partially permeable membrane and allow the pure solvent or the drinkable water to pass through it.And the left over reject water is ejected form another outlet. Most of us already have this complex sounding system installed in our houses, which we very effortlessly ignore. This is where we can contribute our part and celebrate the WED. There this really tiny experiment rather change that you need to do in your daily routine of using RO. I did this on WED and now I would love to do this regularly. All we need to do is Switch on the RO while you are washing your dishes or any small utensils, and use the reject water for washing purpose. Now you might have many small doubts as to how is the possible. So let me clear it for you. First of all, install your RO system such that the outlet of reject water is near your washing place. Secondly, small utensils such as spoons, glass, dishes, cups, bowls can be washed using the small pressure of reject water. This small experiment on daily basis will have two benefits : 1. You won't leave the reject water unused & 2. Since you'll be washing dishes, you will have a watch on RO and can switch it off whenever it is done (Most of us forget to switch it off). Now there are also ways to use reject water either in flush tank or in gardening, but that requires additional plumbing to be done. But, this experiment of mine of using reject water for washing dishes requires nothing but will to do something good for environment. Do try this out at your home. This is how I celebrated WED by saving a little extra water. And as I've titled it that “Love Mother Nature, for it will love you back” justifies itself. As when you save some water by inculcating a very tiny change, mother Nature teaches you a very simple life lesson that “Small change can lead to beautiful differences in Life." THANK YOU
