Chennai's four-year wait for their Thala MS Dhoni and CSK was finally over on Monday with a thrilling victory over Lucknow Super Giants. As Lucknow Super Giants elected to bowl first after winning the toss, Chennai Super Kings batters—including a special cameo by Dhoni—made the most of the batting that was presented to them initially. LSG captain KL Rahul did concede that the team made several errors happen during the post-game ceremony.
LSG had a very strong first impression of being in control. They even outperformed Chennai Super Kings on the power play. But as soon as Dhoni made the decision to add Moeen Ali, things started to go south for LSG. Ali destroyed the Super Giants' batting order alongside Mitch Santner. Marcus Stoinis, Kyle Mayers, and LSG captain KL Rahul were among the notable wickets he claimed. After a devastatingly expensive over, Dhoni's impact player option, Tushar Deshpande, made a comeback.
For the record, at Chepauk, no team has ever chased a target greater than 206. Dhoni's spectacular cameo demonstrated why Thala is the one and only! Dhoni hit two consecutive sixes off of each of the three deliveries from Mark Wood that he faced. The first wicket partnership between the CSK openers and LSG was broken by Ravi Bishnoi on the part of LSG. The reading on Bishnoi's chart was 4-28-3.
The Chennai Super Kings openers fire and crack earlier in the evening performed a fantastic job. The CSK openers Gaikwad and Conway pounded fours and sixes all over the Chennai Stadium. The powerplay score of 79 by the Gaikwad-Conway combination was the third-highest in IPL history for the CSK. LSG's Ravi Bishnoi attacked as Gaikwad fell, just as they appeared to be very dangerous. Conway quickly left after Krunal Pandya of LSG made the outstanding catch. The CSK openers made sure that they built the good total with a few clever boundaries and big sixes. On their home field in Chennai, the Chennai Super Kings have a winning percentage of 71%. There is a sea of yellow and echoing Dhoni chants.
The CSK team, led by Dhoni, was playing at the storied Chepauk Stadium for the first time without the renowned Suresh Raina. The group is responsible for their IPL debut loss to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
Yet, despite their dramatic victory over Delhi Capitals at home, Lucknow Super Giants were unable to extend their winning streak.
