I must say that we are fortunate to see movies that leave a lasting impression on us for many years to come when we were in college days and in our 20s. One such movie that I saw with family at home in Star Plus or Zee channel in the year 2003 was the Hindi movie of ‘Dil Chahta Hai’.
I am not that familiar with Hindi language but that did not stop me from watching Hindi movies. Many of us learn the language through movies and I did learn the language by watching few Hindi films.
Back in that day (year 2003) we did not have English subtitles for any movie but we still watched and enjoyed many Hindi movies. As a college student and when we start with our employment career we are familiar with actors like SRK, Salman, Aamir Khan and with Kajol and Maduri Dixit. We are familiar with many dance hit songs and commercial movies but it is very rare we see movies that combine friendship, comedy, drama and love all in one movie and make us blow our minds in the two hours of our weekend time.
Now my takeaway from this movie was of course the value of friendship that was portrayed so well by all the three characters of Siddharth, Sameer and Aakash enacted by Akshay Khanna, Saif Ali Khan and Aamir Khan respectively. The Actresses of this movie had a decent role with importance given to Priety Zinta (whose performance was impressive).
I really liked the character arc of Siddharth (Sid) in this movie as his interests in art and falling in love with Tara (Dimple Kapadia) and his anger when he is misunderstood was the best emotions that kept the movie engaging with curiosity. The funny character was Sameer and his small reactions and actions made me laugh with hiccups.
The character of Aakash was given more time in this movie and his playfulness and turnaround to a serious and emotional person was a pleasure to watch at the end. My favorite scene was at the end of the movie when Siddharth and Aakash makes out with a hug and few tears in the hospital.
The song of ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ as a travel song was enjoyable to watch and that is when we understood the idea of travelling with friends to few places by the beach. Even today when I think of this movie my mind plays this travel song of Dil Chahta Hai automatically with few memorable scenes.
My appreciation to Director Farhan Akhtar in creating such a great movie that will stay on with me for many years whenever I think of having watched a great Hindi movie in my 20s.
