Revisiting Engeyum Kadhal(2011) Movie As A Fan Girl

Hello my fellow Tamil bloggers, I hope you find this blog relatable. And my dear non-tamil speaking bloggers, I'm glad to introduce, my  favourite tamil rom-com, to you. It is a remake of “Love in the afternoon”.

My initial draft of this blog was 4 mins of me explaining the story-line. But it feels like anyone who has seen that movie can do that, I want to write something that only I can. So, here's what I felt while re-watching the movie after all these years.

My love for the movie starts right from the title card, with the bgm and the autumn leaves, it's just perfect. The title “Engeyum Kadhal” means love is everywhere. The monologue of Prabhu Deva describing Paris as "the Capital of not only France but also love" will live in my mind rent-free. You don't even have to watch the entire movie, just the first 10 minutes will show you the gist of it.

The title track bgm is one of my favorites, you can spot me humming it every time I think of the movie, I hummed it a 100 times while writing this blog.

I used to think that I like this movie only because I was in love with someone that didn't love me back, but re-watching it as a grow-up, made me realize that I like it because it is a good movie, with good visuals, great writing and heartfelt music.

As a girl who has grown up watching “Kanden Kadhalai” and “Santhosh Subramaniyam”, this movie was/is a feast to my heart, eyes and ears.

Another reason for my never-ending love for the movie, is that I relate to it. I am a hopeless romantic, and Kayal is exactly me, but a better version. We are soul sisters. Kayal is short tempered, she gets really angry when you don't respect woman. She falls hard and quick in love, and spends an entire year waiting on a guy, she had known for only a week. Since I had experience with one sided love, I could feel exactly what she felt when he left. I am Kayal, but the happy ending climax is silent.

Kamal, on the other hand, is exactly the type of guys I fall for, tall, scared of commitment, doesn't love me back, looks really good, dresses well, peculiar  voice, honest and a good sense of humour.

The colours and frames used in the movie are minutely crafted. The stylist have done an excellent job in capturing the essence of the characters through their outfits. I personally love the variations of the costumes in the song Nenjil Nenjil, because it is blue and white, which matches the location which is sea and waves, sky and clouds.

I love her green sling bag, it's a need not a want.

The songs and their music videos are incredibly well done. If you have not watched any of the videos, I suggest Engeyum Kadhal and Dhimu Dhimu.

Engeyum Kadhal cause the lyrics romanticize love, while the visuals enchant your heart. Dhimu Dhimu is one of the master pieces ever made, the video single handedly narrates the entire story, and together with the lyrics and melody it causes a tightness in the throat, tears in the eyes. And after making us cry during the final song, they end the movie hilariously.

I donot know how much of the script and story-line is original, but I'm purely grateful to Prabhu Deva for making this movie, and to Harris Jeyaraj for his heartly compositions. And may I just add, Jayam Ravi and Hansika look there best in this movie, my mom agrees.

The movie is so under-rated and unappreciated, my little heart was shattered when found out that the movie did not succeed commercially. Despite the popular opinion, my love for the movie is un-shook.

I promise, I will forever be insanely in love with this film, and that I will whole-heartedly despise the comedy scenes of the friend character in the first half.

Do you have any rom-com suggestion? or any movie review suggestion? Have you watched the songs that I suggested? Share it in the comments, because I will be kicking my legs in the air while reading them, based on true story. <3

Hope you liked this blog, have a nice day and never stop believing in love, because love is everywhere.
