One of England's Romantic poets who had the most impact was Wordsworth.

On April 7, 1770, in Cockermouth, Cumbria, William Wordsworth was born. His father worked in law. Wordsworth's parents both passed away before he turned 15, leaving his four siblings and him in the custody of various relatives. Wordsworth's appreciation of nature as a young man is a recurring motif in many of his poetry.

Wordsworth had a summer vacation wandering around Switzerland and France while he was a student at Cambridge University. He developed a passion for the principles of the French Revolution. Although he started writing poetry when he was in school, none of it was published until 1793. After receiving a bequest from a close cousin in 1795, Wordsworth moved to Dorset with his sister Dorothy. They relocated once more two years later, this time to Somerset to be close to Wordsworth admirer Samuel Taylor Coleridge. They worked together on "Lyrical Ballads," which was printed in 1798. The majority of the poems in this book are by Wordsworth, but Coleridge also contributed "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," which is generally considered to be the first collection of poetry.

Following a trip to Germany with Coleridge, Wordsworth and Dorothy made Grasmere in the Lake District their home in 1799. Their new home was Dove Cottage. Coleridge and his family resided close by. I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, Wordsworth's most well-known poem, was composed in 1804 at Dove Cottage. Wordsworth wed Mary Hutchinson, a companion from his youth, in 1802. Wordsworth experienced personal hardship throughout the following few years. His brother drowned at sea, two of his children passed away, and Dorothy had a nervous breakdown. Around the turn of the century, his political beliefs changed, and he started to lean more conservative as a result of his disillusionment with the developments in France that led to Napoleon Bonaparte's ascension to power.

Wordsworth relocated from Grasmere to the neighbouring Ambelside in 1813. He kept on producing poetry, although it was never as good as his earlier pieces. He wrote very little after 1835. He received a government pension in 1842, and the next year was appointed poet laureate. Wordsworth was buried in the Grasmere churchyard after passing away on April 23, 1850. After his death, the epic autobiographical poem he had been working on since 1798, "The Prelude," was released.

His favourite poem is “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”.
