We cannot forget the earthquake that hit Gujarat on India's Republic Day in January 2001. When the state of Gujarat was ravaged by nature's thirty-second fury, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was the first organization to rush to the rescue. The Red Cross Society is a noble organization that rushes to lend a hand when natural and man-made disasters occur not only in the Gujarat earthquake but also in most parts of the world. It is a humanist organization that reminds us everyday that humanity is not extinct in the world. Let us know the history of that noble man who gave the world that wonderful system Jean Henri Dunant (Jean Henri Dunant) who was born rich and spent all his wealth for the Red Cross and finally died in poverty.
Dunant was born on May 8, 1828 in a wealthy family in Switzerland. Due to the fact that his parents were religious, he naturally showed great interest in religion. After dropping out of high school, he briefly worked at a Geneva bank. At the age of 26, he entered the business world. He went to Algeria and bought a land in Setif, a Swiss colony. He wanted to become very rich like his father by farming and running a farm in it. The water required for the farm had to be brought through pipes. The adjacent land was owned by the French government so he had to get permission from the French government to lay the pipeline there.
After several meetings with the French authorities to no avail, Dunand decided to personally meet Napoleon III, the king who was visiting France at the time, and seek permission. That decision turned his life around. At that time, the French army was engaged in driving the Austrian forces out of Italy. Napoleon III led that army and fought. Dunant went directly to Camp Solferino, Napoleon's headquarters in Italy. He had taken a lot of money with him because he believed that he would have to bribe the officials to meet Napoleon in 1859. On the way he saw the horrors of war. Roads were cut and bridges were destroyed. Somehow he reached a village called Castiglione near Solferino accompanied by a bullock cart.
