You must have had the experience of buying light bulbs called 'Bulb'. When you buy it, you would have asked how many watts of power you want the lights to have. Watt is a measure of electricity. 'Watt' is also the name of an inventor who holds a very important place in history. A system of calculating electricity is named after him in honor of his invention to mankind. You may wonder what an important discovery he has made! His invention was the cornerstone of the 'Industrial Revolution' that took place in Europe in the seventeenth century. A wonderful invention that showed the world the glory of mechanical power, a rare invention that helped industrialize the world. The historical hero who harnessed the natural power of 'steam' and gave it to mankind as a great power was James Watt. The device he invented was called 'Steam Engine'.

James Watt was born on January 19, 1736 in Greenock, Scotland. His family was poor and the economy of the country was in a bad state due to the frequent invasions of the English in Scotland during that period. Prices of essential commodities were also high. For James Watt, painting is lust. But the family was too poor to buy paper for drawing. So James Watt would draw on the floor of the house to satisfy his desire. Do you know what all his drawings are? Math related pictures with circles, squares and triangles. James Watt was ill from birth. He always coughs and when winter comes to Scotland his condition gets worse. His mother would not send him to school at those times.

During his school days he was very interested in geometry. It was a major reason why he excelled in engineering later in life. Do you know what England was like at that time, about 250 years ago? Peace and quiet everywhere. In urban areas, the only sounds are the clatter of horses' hooves and the wheels of the carts they pull. In rural areas you can hear the sound of wheels pumping water in the river. Fields and forests as far as the eye could see. There were small factories here and there. There they produced goods by manual labour. There were a few machines that could be operated by pulley and lever. But manpower was also required to operate them. This is just part 1 part 2 will be upload stay tuned.
