New shoes are always a good idea! There are so many shoe sayings and shoe quotes that inspire and relate to every life. Shoes are part of life as fashion to comfort, from suffering to success. What about the shoes on the bank of the river Danube? Do you know about the sixty pairs of iron shoes? These pairs of shoes have a very moving and heart-rending story behind them.
Shoes on the Danube bank are a bitter reminder of the war atrocities, the Jews had to go through during Second World War in Budapest, Hungry. It is a memorial erected on the east bank of the Danube just in front of the Hungarian Parliament building on 16th April 2005. The film director Can Togay and sculptor Gyula Pauer created it to honor the Jews, who were massacred by the Hungarian fascist Arrow Cross Party, in the final days of WWII. They were forced to take off their shoes on the edge of the water and then directly shot just so their bodies were carried away by the water of the Danube. The shoes were quite an essential commodity during the war, so they were either sold or used themselves by their murderers.
The sixty pairs of shoes, cast out of iron, attached to the stone embankment, are of different shapes and sizes, emphasizing that no child, woman, man, young or old was safe. This memoir takes you back to the time of the Holocaust. Historians commonly define the Holocaust as the genocide of around two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population, some six million Jews by Nazi Germany and its allies. The Diary of Anne Frank describes the pitiful plight of the Jews in concentration camps and before in Nazi-occupied Europe. The Danube bank is just a mere witness of another horrific part of that Holocaust.
A commemorative plaque on the Danube bank reads: TO THE MEMORY OF THE VICTIMS SHOT INTO THE DANUBE BY ARROW CROSS MILITIAMEN IN 1944โ45. ERECTED: 16th APRIL 2005.
Today, the visitors and the locals put candles and flowers in the memory of those who had to left their shoes behind on the Danube Bank.
At the ending of the article, here goes one of my favorites: You do not need a guidebook to see New Orleans โ just a pair of new shoes.
