Webb catches 'exceptional' pictures of universes converging close to super-huge dark opening (photograph)

The Hubble Space Telescope observed two galaxy clusters colliding at high speeds in unprecedented detail — revealing how they ripped through each other more than 2 billion years ago.

Astronomers captured the collision between two massive galaxy clusters, known as MACS J0416.1-2403 and MACS J1752.8+4440, using the Wide Field Camera 3 and Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard NASA's Hubble telescope. The team was able to capture details about the nature of the collisions including the locations where the individual galaxies were stripped away and their motions.

The results reveal that the pair of galaxies merged together in a series of three events over a period of roughly 1 million to 2 million years before splitting apart again.

2. NASA captures incredible images of Earth from space (image)

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has taken some amazing images of our planet while en route to its final destination at Saturn. The craft captured stunning views of the moon Titan, Mercury and Venus among others.

In the first half of April 2017, the probe captured an image of Earth, while passing behind Mars, making it appear larger than normal according to scientists. The image shows clouds floating around the planet, giving the appearance of a blue orb surrounded by a thick orange glow.

Cassini was sent back to Earth earlier this year after 13 years in orbit. However, it wasn't until recently that the probe achieved sufficient speed to begin its descent towards the surface of Saturn.

3. Astronauts capture amazing footage of ISS from inside Space Station (video)

Two astronauts have uploaded a video of themselves looking out of windows of the International Space Station over Moscow. In the clip, the men can be seen taking in views of Russia, China and Canada from inside the orbiting laboratory.

It comes after a Russian cosmonaut showed off his skills with a knife while working outside the station. He successfully sliced open a water bottle in what he described as a “very difficult” manoeuvre.

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev said he had been practising with a Swiss Army knife since March 15th. He told state news agency Tass: “I wanted to find out just how much pressure I could apply to the edges of the blade without losing the knife.”

Artemyev cut himself twice, once on the thumb and once on the wrist, and said both injuries required stitches.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Astronomers captured an image of two galaxies, which appear as they are about to merge, not only near a supermassive black hole but also in the same way as other galaxies that have merged in the past.

The result of this unusual double image, captured using the Magellan telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, resembles a quilt of bright rings, each ring representing a galaxy that was ripped apart by the black hole, and scientists announced the unique images earlier this week at the 229th meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

“It’s both amazing and unusual,” Andrew Levan at University of Warwick in England said in a statement. “The quasar can be seen within the quasar’s host galaxy, which we know is more than 8 billion light years away. So to see the quasar appear as a quasar within the host galaxy is extraordinary.”

The two galaxies have been orbiting each other in the far reaches of the Universe for some time. Levan said they are beginning to collide and merge and will eventually form a single elliptical galaxy.

An international team of astronomers led by Stephen Weaver at the University of Warwick in England captured the unique image.
