Happy English Language Day!
The purpose of English Language Day is to educate and entertain the public about the history, culture, and accomplishments connected with the language. The day frequently includes book-reading sessions, English tests, poetry readings, literary exchanges, and other language-promotional activities.
Private Life
English Language Day is neither a federal nor state holiday; it is a worldwide celebration.
About English Language Day English is one of the six official languages of the UN and one of the two working languages of the Secretariat. Due to its widespread use, English is frequently referred to be a "world language" or the lingua franca of the contemporary era (a language that serves as a bridge for speakers of other languages). On April 23, 2010, the UN held its first English Language Day celebration.
English Language Day: What is it?
In addition to Arabic Language Day, Chinese Language Day, French Language Day, Russian Language Day, and Spanish Language Day, English Language Day was first observed in 2010. These are the six official languages of the United Nations, and each has a designated day to celebrate its heritage, culture, and accomplishments.
Why is April 23 designated as English Language Day?
Shakespeare's death anniversary and alleged birthday led to the selection of this day. Shakespeare not only wrote the most well-known plays in the English language, but he also significantly influenced the way people use English today. Shakespeare produced hundreds of new terms and phrases that are still in use today during the 16th and 17th centuries when he was writing, as the English language was undergoing significant changes. Shakespeare was the first person to use words like "gossip," "fashionable," and "lonely," for instance. Additionally, he coined the expressions "break the ice," "all our yesterdays," "faint-hearted," and "love is blind." What do you suppose they mean?
English's ancestors
When Germanic tribes entered Celtic-speaking Britain in the fifth century, they took their languages along with them. This is when the history of the English language began. Later, Vikings from Scandinavia attacked and colonized with their own languages. When William I of modern-day France was crowned king in 1066, Norman French was adopted as the official language and used in court proceedings. Initially, communication was difficult because the elite classes spoke French while the lower classes continued to speak English, but eventually, French started to influence English. An estimated 45% of words in the English language have French roots. Shakespeare's time saw the development of Modern English, the invention of printing, and the need for people to start agreeing on "correct" spelling and vocabulary.
The spread of English

The spread of English all over the world has an ugly history but a rich and vibrant present. During the European colonial period, several European countries, including England, competed to expand their empires. They stole land, labor, and resources from people across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. By the time former British colonies began to gain independence in the mid-20th century, English had become established in their institutions. Many brilliant writers from diverse places across Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia had started writing in English, telling their stories of oppression. People from all over the world were using English to talk and write about justice, equality, freedom, and identity from their own perspectives. The different varieties of English created through this history of migration and colonization are known as World Englishes.
