There are eight planets in our solar system.
In the order of their increasing distance from the sun, they are Mercury, Venus, Mars Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Planet look like bright star but they do not have their own light. They shine because they reflect the sun light falling on them.
The time taken by planet to revolve around the sun is called the period of revolution.
Planet have different period of revolution as their distance from the sun is different.
Planet also rotate around their axes. The time taken by a planet to complete one rotation is called period of rotation.
1. Mercury (Budh )
It is the smallest planet of the solar system.
It can be observed by our naked eyes just before sunrise during September and October.
It has no satelite.
2. Venus ( Shukra )
It is hottest planet even hotter than Mercury. This is because it has a dense CO2 atmosphere that traps heat radiation on its surface.
It has no moon or satellites.
It rotates on its from East to West.
Venus shows pharse just like moon.
3. Earth ( Prithvi )
Earth is the only planet where life exists.
Right distance from the sun and presence of water.
Protected blanket of ozone layer.
It appears as blue due to reflection of light from water and land.
It rotates on its axis from west to east and completes one rotation in 24 hours.
The plane on which the equator of the Earth exists is called the equatorial plane. The plane on which the Earth revolves round the Sun is called the orbital plane of the Earth. These two planes coincide with each at angle of 23.5ยฐ; this tilting of Earth causes season changes.
The rotation of Earth cause day and night and the revolution causes change in seasons.
It has only one natural satellite called the Moon.
4. Mars (Mangal)
It appears red. Its soil contains large amounts of iron which give it a reddish look; therefore, it is also called the red planet of the solar system.
It is a rocky planet and is half the size of the Earth.
It has a very thin atmosphere.
It has two natural satellites named Phobos.
piter is the largest and heaviest planet of the solar stem.
5. Jupiter
It can with seen naked eyes.
Its mass is 318 times the mass of the Earth. It has a large number of satellites or Moons.
Moon Ganymede is the largest Moon in the Solar
System; its size is even larger than that of Mercury.
It has faint rings around it.
When it is looked through a powerful telescope, a red spot can be seen on its surface.
6. Saturn (Shani)
It is second largest planet our solar system.
The most distinguishing feature for Saturn is its beautiful iconic rings.
It has large number of Moons. Titan, its biggest Moon, is even bigger than Mercury.
Saturn's atmosphere is filled with gases and therefore it is the least dense of all planets.
Its density is less than the density of water. It is th lightest planet in the solar system. If you were t put it into a giant bathtub, it would float.
7.Uranus (Indra)
It is very cold since it is located far from the Sun.
โข It has a tilted rotational axis; its angle of inclination is 97". Because of this it appears to roll on its side.
It also has rings.
