The fog slowly moved above the still water. Swapna sat there looking and wondering how slowly the fog grazes over the still water. It has become a habit for Swapna to come to the lake ever since they found Laya's body from the lake. She comes daily before dawn and sits under the big old Banyan tree and stare at the still water hoping that one day the stillness would answer her why Laya did what she did.
Swapna felt like she was still trapped in the day when she found out that Laya is missing. It has been fifty days since they found the lifeless body of Laya from this lake. Everyone seems to have adjusted to the fact that Laya is no more but Swapna couldn't. Laya left the world just like that; one moment she was there and the other she is no more; no notes, no messages. She just left.
Swapna found that strange. Laya always wrote whatever she felt and kept an account of everything that happened in her life. Then why didn't she leave a note? This question haunted Swapna. Swapna believed the visits to the lake will somehow answer all her questions. Her guts told that the lake, the banks and the trees know something she did not.
As Swapna sat there, memories came flashing into her mind. Laya and Swapna were bestfriends from highschool. There was not a single thing under the sun that they never discussed. Italy was their dream place. So they decided to do graduation in business studies and go to Italy to pursue masters and eventually settle there. Everything went according to plan except the fact that Laya is no more.
Swapna wanted closure. She wanted to know the reason so that she could continue with her life. She looked into the lake and beyond, closed her eyes and remembered Laya's face. Looking into Laya's beautiful eyes Swapna asked, Why? Laya didn't say anything. She turned and walked towards the lake slowly. Swapna stared at Laya as she walked slowly towards the lake. Slowly Laya started to descend into the lake. Swapna kept staring into the lake until there was nothing left to see of Laya.
“I wish I could know Laya. You have no right to leave me like this, you know. Why didn't you leave me a note at least?" Swapna murmured. “You better tell me tomorrow or else I am never coming back,” Swapna murmured as if talking to Laya and got up to leave.
To be continued….
