I love rain. Everyone does. Rain is a pleasure. From childhood, till now the rain has always brought me happiness. The first rain of the season is my favourite. It comes with many addons like the smell of wet soil, the sight of trees after the shower and birds flying in the sky after rains. Rain is that one thing in nature to which we can compare every human emotion. As a writer, rain has always been the best metaphor for me, whether sorrow, happiness, or love. 

Everyone will have a story about rain. I have read somewhere that rain is beautiful to those who have a strong roof above their head. For those who have a leaking house, the rain will be a nightmare. That is true. Rain has many faces and we see the face that it chooses to show us. For some rain is a beautiful young lady and for others a ferocious witch, it is up to the rain to choose which face to show to you.

The dark clouds, the persistent wetness and cold weather have always been close to my heart. Back when I was a kid, Monsoon and rain marked the beginning of a new academic year. New books, new bag, new umbrella, new pair of shoes and new uniforms, everything about Monsoon is new every year. May because of this rainy season always brought new memories into my life. Every Monsoon is new to me, fresh and vivid. 

As I grew up, my love for rain increased. I used to skip going in auto just to walk in rain from school back to home. The sensation of cold drops of rain on my hands and walking through the flowing water is beyond the wordy explanations. The sound, the touch and the smell of rain exhilarate me, no matter how mad it sounds, rain is something that drives me crazy. 

I have never attributed rain to scary or dangerous. But the floods in Kerala in the year 2018 showed me another face of rain. So far the rain in my memories had only one face- calm and cute, but in the year of 2018 added two different faces of rain into my memory- scary and ruthless. The sound of rain was mixed with the cries of many hundreds of people who were forced out of their houses due to the flood. The rain no longer smelled good. It smelled of death and hunger. People were suffering, rivers overflowed and dams were opened. Water was everywhere. 

Till then rain has always given me good memories, but this time it was different. The devastation rain caused was so large that even now people are afraid of continuous rain. 

As I told you earlier, it is up to the rain to choose the face it shows to us. The flood has taught me two things, one was to be gentle with the environment and earth, that there is someone out there watching all our activities and we will be paid for our actions and the second is even the softest and calmest person will have a scary and ferocious side.
