Each charecter have his/her own story which is bought to the main timeline. Story telling in anime is so refined that I bet a failure anime must have a storyline better than an average tv show.

Unlike other tv series, anime is something that needs a lot of hardwork. It takes about one week to animate an episode which is only 20 minutes long. Also it is a very expensive procedure. It takes an average of 15 hundred thousand United State dollars to make an episode of anime.
