Egypt is famous for its pyramids. The pyramids of Giza are the largest and most famous objects in the world. The pyramids were built to honor certain pharaohs of Egypt's fourth ruling dynasty, known as the Old Kingdom. This was the first era of Egyptian civilization, lasting from 2688 to 2181 BC. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids found there.
One of the Seven Wonders of the World, it was built between 2580 and 2560 BC. Built for the eighth dynasty pharaoh his quops.
The Pyramid includes rooms specially created for the King and Queen, robbery tunnels, modern opening and closing gates, the Grand His Gallery, and a vast vacuum deep within the Pyramid.
It is estimated that 2.3 billion bricks were used to build the pyramids, but the exact dimensions are unknown as they are given in Egyptian units.
The Pyramids of Giza are more attractive than other pyramids and have become a popular tourist destination. Most of Egypt's tourism income comes from the large number of visitors to the pyramids.
FACTS ABOUT PYRAMIDS
The first pyramids to be built were the Giza pyramids. Around 2630 BCE, Pharaoh Djoser constructed a step pyramid in Saqqara, south of Giza. At first, kings' and queens' tombs were underground.
Prior to Sneferu's Red Pyramid, which was the first true pyramid built between 2613 and 2589 BCE, Djoser constructed his tomb.
2. After the red pyramid, the great pyramid was built.
Pharaoh Sneferu's red pyramid was 341 feet (ca. tall (104 meters).
After the first pyramid in Maidum was left unfinished while the second was transformed into the Bent pyramid, it was built at Dahshur.
Khufu then began construction on the Great Pyramid at Giza. It was the biggest of the relative multitude of pyramids that were built in Old Egypt.
A morgue, a valley temple, boat pits, a raised road, and tombs for Khufu's wives are all contained within the pyramid.
3. Giza's pyramids have shrunk.
The Giza pyramids are not as tall as they were when they were first built. They are currently 455 feet (roughly 139 meters) tall.
Erosion has been occurring on the pyramids for at least four millennia. Due to this, the stones on the structure are now only 25 feet (7.62 meters) in height.
The pyramid's top is currently occupied by an iron triangle. This represents the capstone that formerly served as the building's highest point.
