The subject of gangsterism is not alien to Malayalam cinema. Many times we have seen the stories of Kerala's soil being stained with blood. It is also a subject that has been a constant presence in Bollywood films but has been alienated from Malayalam for a while. Shaji Kailas is presenting that subject again to the audience with the film Kappa.G.R. Kappa is based on the work Shankhumukhi written by Indu Gopan. Kappa shows the gangster leader named Kota Madhu who shook the city of Thiruvananthapuram and the power centers of that city and the lives around him. The whole of the film is the evolution of A N Madhukumar, a Thiruvananthapuram resident, into Kota Madhu. Madhu's life is full of conflict with blows and setbacks.Shaji Kailas has tried a new style without portraying the character of Kota Madhu directly as a mass avatar. That is, through the eyes of other characters. He and the screenwriter narrate how Madhu intervened in each of their lives. Instead of Madhu directly telling his own story, other characters introduce Madhu to the audience.Ultimately, behind the film, the director is reinventing himself in the way the film is designed and in character creation. If we look at Shaji Kailash's previous films, we can see that he is ready to challenge himself. The film starts unexpectedly and ends in an unexpected place. There too, Shaji Kailas is breaking the precedents of his previous works.Shaji Kailas who played Narasimha, Vallyetta or Tiger will not be seen in Kappa.
Indu Gopan has followed the style of telling stories through characters as in his novels. The author has managed to give each character their own personality. From Kota Madhu, Anand, Binu Trivikraman, Pramila, Lateef and Madhu's shadow Ikka, each character has their own story to tell. Each type of life can be seen in them.Coming to the performance of the stars, let's start with Prithviraj who came as Kota Madhu. Prithvi has made Madhu, who is haunted by the past and keeps on trying to get out of it, unable to walk. Anand's helplessness is perfected by Asif Ali. Aparna Balamurali as Pramila, Anna Benn as Binu and Dilish Pothan as Latif must be applauded. One person worth mentioning is Jagdish. After Leelak and Roshak, he is flooding the screen. The character who stands as Madhu's helper, third eye and hand reveals Jagadish's transformation as an actor.
Don Vincent's background score and Jomon T John's camera played an indispensable role in elevating the characters.Kappa is not a traditional gangster-police encounter film. The film does not follow the path of regular Shaji Kailas films. Kappa is a class film with the director's signature that has been upgraded according to the new times.
