The seven wonders of the ancient world is a list of spectacular constructions of antiquities given by many authors and ancient poets. Of the original wonders of the world, only the Great Pyramid of Giza is still intact and the others were believed to be destroyed by various reasons. Here is a list of all the original seven wonders:
• Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt.
It is obvious to start with the only wonders alive, the great pyramid of giza. It is a part of three pyramids - Khufu, Khafra and Menkaura. These were built between 2700 BC qnd 2500 BC. The largest of them is Khufu, also known as the great pyramid.
• Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
According to ancient poems, these were built in modern day Iraq, which was the old Euphrates River around 600 B.C. It was built by Nebuchadnezzar II. The stories of this wonder is referred in both Greek and Roman literature.
• Statue of Zeus of Olympia.
The king of all the gods in Greek Mythology, Zeus had a statue of him with a thunder bolt sitting at a wooden throne. It was made richly by ivory and gold. It was believed to be destroyed in a giant fire when it was moved to another temple.
• Temple of Artemis
This temple at Ephesus, was actually more than one temple. This building was burned down in the year 356 B.C. when Alexander the great was believed to be born. It was burned down by Herostratus who just did it because he wanted his name to be known throughout history. He was immediately sentenced to death and also his name was considered illegal to utter.
• Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
It was built in now south eastern Turkey. It is a tomb built for the king of Carnia in Asia Minor, Mausolus when he died in 353 B.C. it was believed to be destroyed in an earthquake
• Colossus of Rhodes.
It was a giant statue of Helios, the god of sun in the 3rd century BC. It stood for over 60 years until it was destroyed by an earthquake.
• The Lighthouse of Alexandria.
It was located on an island near the Alexandria city. It was built around 270 BC. It was considered to be destroyed several times during a series of earthquakes between 1323 and 956.
