Hi again. Welcome or welcome back my dear bloggers to my daily blogs. I hope you all are in good health and are having a blast of a day.
In my last blog, we talked about stories and myths behind constellations. It is rather interesting to know how these connections of stars came to be in the first place and what are the myths behind its origin. Previously we talked about Cassiopeia, scorpius, perseus, andromeda and . In this blog, we'll talk about some more constellations.
○ Aquarius
Aquarius being on of the oldest documented constellations, is also one of the biggest, spreading over 980 square degrees. 'Aquarius' actually means ‘a water bearer’ or ‘cupbearer’in Latin. It is a depiction of a handsome young man named Ganymede, who was bought to Mount Olympus to serve as a cupbearer to the gods. He was gifted an eternal youth. He was also considered as a god of homosexual love and appears as a play mate to the love gods Eros and Hymeneuas .
○ Cancer
Cancer, meaning 'crab' in latin,is one of the dimmest constellations and one of the zodiac constellations. During the 12 labors of Hercules, a punishment for killing his own family, a giant crab was sent by jealous goddess Hera, while hercules was battling with a water serpent Hydra. Although hercules managed to kill the crab, the cancer constellations represents this giant crab.
○ Taurus.
One of the oldest and most recognizable constellations, Taurus is represented as “ the bull”. In the greek mythology, taurus is referred to in many stories but the most famous one includes Zeus turning himself into a golden horned, white bull after he fell in love with the Phoenician princess Europa. He took Europa as the bull to Crete on his back, traveling across the Mediterranean Sea.
The stars we are given. The constellations we make. That is to say, stars exist in the cosmos, but constellations are the imaginary lines we draw between them, the meanings we give the vast sky, the amazing stories we tell
