In our State a high school with more than one hundred pupils has four peons. in some government high schools there are as many as ten or twelve peons.

    Generally prople passing the MSC examination are appointed as peons. But in some schools we find people with higher qualifications working as peons. They do the menial (servant) jobs for the school.

    I am a pupil of class V in Zilla School, Bishnupur. There are seven peons in our school. Two of them work in the school hostel. Out of the rest five, one is a watchman, another one a sweeper. The third one is the science attendant. The fourth one is attached to the school. office and the fifth one is the duftry of the school. He is the head peon of our school.

    It is this head peon with whom we are all familiar. He is Mr.Ramachandra Patra. He is popularly know as Ramu Uncle.

        He is a man of fifty. He wears a dhoti and white half shirt. He has a pair of sleppers on his feet. He takes the headmaster calls any pupil for punishment, he begs the headmaster to excuse him.

        He posts the school letters and brings the daily mail of the school from the post office. He also does the treasury work of the school.

        His salary is much too small for his family to live on. He spends a little for himself and sends the rest for his family in the village.

        He is happy in spite of his poverty. He is a kind heart. He stands by everybody in their defficulties. He loves us all and we love him too.
