We often find ourselves tightly held under the clutches of depression.
And believe me guys, I won't share any theory here, but an understanding which will definitely help you come out of such undesired states of mind.
And the most important part : I've found myself in depression for a whooping 8 years. (It kept coming in and going away).
But I never really realized how it all happened, how I suddenly came out of it and what's the solution.
However, after spending a long time in the library looking out for answers, and researching a lot over the internet, I found my answer.

First of all, we think a lot of things all day all night.
But most of the time, the thoughts keep running in the background without our conscious choice.
I mean, we often think without being aware. (It happens fast)
And this is the nature of thoughts.
Once a thought starts, it begins to increase its intensity.
Once this intensity increases to a higher level, it affects our emotions.
Hence, during depression, it feels so difficult to think positive. (As your intensity of negative thoughts is very very high and you get emotionally affected, often termed as " mood swing " )
As per the principle, whenever a negative thought is being repeated in mind, it keeps sending signals to our subconscious mind.
The subconscious responds accordingly, bringing in more negativity.
Your subconscious is like a genie. It doesn't argue. Whatever you focus on a thought level, the genie responds by giving more of that to you.
In simpler words, your thoughts govern your experience.
Now, the question is, How can we apply brakes on these highly intense negative thoughts?
First step is to be aware.
Once you get aware of your thoughts, you immediately separate yourself from them.
This separation breaks the momentum.
Once you withdraw your attention from the thought, you separate your attention from it, which means you are no longer fueling those thoughts.
Once the fuel goes empty, the car has to stop.
Now, if you start thinking about such negative things again, you will begin to fuel those thoughts again, which means the car of negative thinking will start gaining speed again.
Hence, you must realise whether it actually requires your attention or not.
Once you break the momentum, start fueling the cars of your desire.
Run cars of joy, passion, love, excitement, ease and this will send different signals to your subconscious mind.
When this happens, such prosperous thoughts will start gaining momentum and sooner you will feel a burst of joy and ecstasy.
This happened simply because you understood the principle and focused on your wants and desires.
This expanded and gave you more joy in return.
