The story revolves around a young Andulasian shepherd boy named Santiago, who dreams of finding a treasure hidden in the Egyptian Pyramids. A Gypsy interprets his dream and offers him one-tenth of the treasure, provided he leaves with one-tenth of his sheep. Santiago works as a crystal merchant in the Tangier market to earn money for sheep, working there for almost a month before returning to the journey.
Throughout his journey, Santiago meets Melchizedek, King of Salem, who offers to help him locate the treasure if he part with one-tenth of his sheep. During his journey, Santiago meets Fatima, who promises him a return one day if he is part of his dream. In an oasis, Santiago meets an Alchemist who teaches him the language of the world and that everything is written in the soul of the world. They are taken captive by tribesmen dressed in blue, but Santiago turns into wind to make them believe.
At the Pyramids of Egypt, Santiago digs for the treasure, surrounded by refugees from tribal wars. The leader of the group shares his own dream of a treasure in Spain, where shepherds and their sheep slept under a ruined church with a sycamore growing out of it. Santiago realizes that the greatest treasure is himself and that every treasure lies in our hearts. This book is brilliantly written, touching the heart and promoting spirituality.
