Rishi Sunak was born on 12 May 1980 at Southampton General Hospital in Southampton, Hampshire, [3] [4] to South East African Hindu parents of Indian Punjabi origin, Yashvir and Usha Sunak [5] [6]. He attended Stroud School, a preparatory school in Romsey, and Winchester College, an independent boarding school for boys, where he was head boy. [7] [8] He was a waiter at a curry house in Southampton during his summer holidays. [9] [10] He read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating in 2001. Sunak's paternal grandfather was from Gujranwala (modern Pakistan[14] [15] ), and his maternal grandfather was from Ludhiana (modern India [16] ); Both cities were then in the Punjab province of British India. His grandparents moved to East Africa and then to the United Kingdom in the 1960s. [17]
His father, Yashvir Sunak, was born and raised in the Kenya Colony and Protectorate (now Kenya), and is a general practitioner in the National Health Service. His mother, Usha Sunak, born in Tanganyika (which later became part of Tanzania), was a pharmacist and owned Sunak Pharmacy in Southampton between 1995 and 2014, and has a degree from Aston University. Sunak is the eldest of three brothers. [19] His brother, Sanjay (born 1982), is a psychologist, and his sister, Rakhi Williams (born 1985), works in New York as head of strategy and planning at the United Nations Global Fund for Education in Emergencies. Huh.
